Quite possibly the best written and acted "chick flick" of all time! "Love Actually" manages to navigate that treacherous terrain between holiday movies and romantic comedies without falling into the pitfalls of either genre or resting too heavily on any gimmicks other than an absolutely stellar cast. Brilliant, from stem to stern.
Director Frank Capra (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) took home every Oscar in the book (well, okay, all the major ones) for this seminal 1934 comedy starring Clark Gable as a hard-bitten reporter who stays close to a runaway heiress (Claudette Colbert) rather than lose a good story. Funny and sexy, the film is full of memorable scenes often referred to in other films, such as the "walls of Jericho" (a mere bedcover hung on a line down the middle of a room so opposite-sex roommates can get undressed), and Colbert's famous flash of thigh to stop a speeding car in its tracks. Capra's brisk, urbane brand of wit was a perfect complement to his populist faith in the common man (in this case, Gable's character), and that inspired combination makes this film both a spirited entertainment and an uplifting experience.
Even film snobs have our guilty pleasures. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is one of mine. I own the DVD, but it was just on TV a couple nights ago and my roommates and I could not pull ourselves away. Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are absolutely adorable, and there is no denying their onscreen chemistry. Sure , it's far from an Oscar-winner, but it is probably my favorite romantic comedy of recent years.
I am not a huge fan of girly movies (unless it's Mean Girls that is) but this movie is pretty darn entertaining. I love Cameron Diaz in it ... she reminds me of well, me .. hahaa. And Christina Applegate is hysterical. The movie is kinda gross(ish) but it's perfect for a girls night in with a plenty of booze and cookies sort of night.
BEST MOVIE EVER. Not really, but I've probably seen it so many times that it has brainwashed me - maybe 20? 30? More? I don't know, but it's great. Baby (Jennifer Gray) goes to the Catskills with her parents, expecting another lame summer, but strikes up a romance with a badass and extremely masculine...dancer! (Patrick Swayze) Much to the chagrin of her parents, her sister, her persnickety little dweeb of a boyfriend, and everyone else - until they see how Baby and her man shake it! Wooo-eeeee!
