Why does he want it?
I recently closed on a house in Venice (the one in S Cali) and will be moving in this weekend and now that I am going to be 12 blocks from the beach I figure this is my chance to finally learn to surf. I work with two avid surfers who in summary agreed that a funboard would be the way to start. So that's what "I WANT". I have no idea how much they cost so I am going to say I'd like to spend 100$ but if they are more or less that's probably fine.

i love this japanese surfboard creation!!!...*S*...my friend has promised to teach me how to surf...i learn't a little when i was a teenager but have forgotten...
If I were to buy a surfboard, I would go for this one from Alexandra Cassaniti. It is custom shaped to your liking, and handpainted before glassing. Art and sport in one? Who could resist.

Ranging from 6'8" to 7'10" New Surf Project has some very well reviewed boards. Some of them are a bit on the heavy side, but they have good construction and variety.
