The Kidrobot Munny is arguably the best platform toy on the market. For those unfamiliar, a platform toy is a molded blank that is intended for decoration by YOU! And the Munny has proven itself to be the most flexible of the bunch, spawning thousands of amazing custom figures! (For a taste, go to Flickr and search "custom munny"....amazing stuff!) Kidrobot has recently released the Mini Munny...a 4" version of the regular 7" Munny figure. Coming in at only ten bucks, this is the perfect, logical evolution of the only designer toy that actually has a teacher kit and school program attached to it! Now everyone can easily afford designer vinyl toys...and design one themselves! Available in White, Pink, or Blue. Comes packaged with a "My Name Is..." card, a sticker you can color, one mini-marker, and a mystery accessory...snap-on mohawk, pinwheel, glasses, picket sign, or....something else. ;)
The thrill of discovery is getting harder to come by, now that all information is about four clicks away. So the simple pleasure of smacking something with a mallet, and digging into it to find something? Priceless. This great kit has a plastic velociraptor skeleton completely encased in a brick of tiny rocks, and comes with basic archeology tools so that your kids can dig out and re-assemble the skeleton themselves. Truly awesome! (Recommended to be done outdoors. It can make quite a mess...)
Little kids can appreciate books and other tools of learning if they look fun and engaging to use. Early grade school is also a great time to pick up an interest in a new language.
This little video game system is made for kids. Here's why I love it: 1) It plugs right into the front of the TV - easy access and my kid can get it set up and started all on his own. 2) The controllers are super simple. They have a huge button in the middle, four colored buttons along the top and a joystick. 3) It's improved my kid's hand-eye coordination and attention span ten-fold. Just for reference, my son is four years old and though he's had the system for two years, he's used it most over the last 6 months. ***Did I mention it comes in pink?***
One of my favorite memories from elementary school was "playing" (what teachers knew was learning) on GeoSafari. Sure, technology has quickly surpassed this educational toy, but it's still a great way for kids to learn so many things - from the solar system to world geography, learning has never been so fun.
This little labs science kit contains everything a growing learner needs to start exploring the world around them. It captures the core aspect of science.. when someone wonders "how does that happen?" Then builds experiments that teach critical thinking, exploration and nourishes the wonder you feel when you see something you've always known happens, but never known why. I've never been a huge fan of "boy" or "girl" toys, each child has the ability to learn from good toys and this toy is definitely one of those toys that encourage exploration.
