Campaign Description

The Genocide Awareness group invites you to join us in sponsoring a child in a genocide-ravaged country. For $1500.00 we will not only be able to sponsor a child for 2 years, but we will also be able to give direct aid to his/her community as well.

Every person has difficulties, but none can compare with what many children all over the world try to live through each and every day, including Flavia, the little girl from Rwanda that we are currently sponsoring. Many have no money, no food, no water, no toys, no educational opportunities, no doctors or medical care, and perhaps worst of all, no hope. They are offered no choice but to live in fear and desperation every day and fear for their parents and brothers and sisters.

Your donation helps to give hope to many through the funding of vital development work in Flavia's community, work such as digging wells, improving sanitation, and building health clinics to provide clean water, nutritious food, health care, and access to education.

There isn't a Photo section here but we will still post all that we can. ALL information and letters and photos we receive will be posted at Genocide Awareness in the Photo section and also in the Discussion Topic named 'Letters from Flavia' (but with the full name and location omitted - full information will be made available only to donors upon request).

And so whether it's $5, $50, or $500, every penny helps. Dig up the change in your couch, crack open your penny jar or piggy bank, return your empty beer and pop bottles, ANYTHING that you can give will help make life better for a little girl in desperate need. Donations can even be made anonymously if so desired.

Our most recent cash gift resulted in Flaviah and her family finally getting to purchase a few of the most basic of necessities that most of us take for granted, things such as soap, and blankets, and shoes.

No extras of any kind, not a doll that every eight year old girl should have, not a little bite of candy, just the absolute essentials needed for them to get by for a little while longer. If these are the items that they needed to buy with our donation, how difficult must their lives be without our help?

Many people would sponsor a child but simply can't afford it. But if we all chip in together we can do it, we can help, we can change the world, one child at a time.

We received a Gift Catalog from the sponsorship agency and there's a list a mile long of things we could get for Flaviah. At first I figured we could just get the opinions of everyone involved here, but how could we know what she really needs or could use?

So in my last letter to her I've also included a short note to the volunteers asking what would be most beneficial to the family. There are different kinds of animals, different kinds of trees, clothing and blankets, all kinds of stuff.

There are also community options such as classroom textbooks and things of that sort.

Whenever I hear back I will let all of you know and get your opinions, just remember that it could be a few months before then.

And PLEASE everyone, invite just ONE person to the group and get them to donate just one dollar. It makes a difference!

Thank you to the most recent John Doe donation...now if we could just get everybody else to donate $1!

The following is another lettered we received from Flaviah recently.

Dear Sponsor Genocide Awareness,

Firstly I greet you and your families. Let me hope that you are fine and as for us we are fine.

I am happy to write to you thanking you very much because of the gifts that you sent to me. (unknown) includes three toothbrushes, hair clips, pencils, colours, books and the letter. (Unknown) at home.

I help my parents to fetch water and to collect firewood.

Before I sign off again, thank you and I ask that God Bless you.

Your sponsored child,
U----- Flavia

Helped to write by S.F. and translated by N.D., the community volunteers.

A reminder to all that Flaviah's birthday is coming up soon. She will be 8 on July 6. For those of you that would like to send a card or anything else please let me know and I will give you the information you'll need.

And PLEASE send invites to your friends and family to help us help Flaviah. Encourage everyone you know to donate even a dollar and that would add up quick! Then we could afford to sponsor another child!

FINALLY, I posted the photo of the things I picked up for our Flavia. You can view it either in the Photo section of Genocide Awareness, Rwanda Genocide Awareness, or in my own Photo section in the album 'Flavia'.

Those of you with more experience at this sort of thing, if you have any recommendations or suggestions as to what to send/not to send, please let us know.

And just so you know, postage to Rwanda was a LOT less than I had expected. It was actually quite reasonable which is encouraging for me to send more packages than I might have.

There are many persons ready to do what is right because in their hearts they know it is right. But, they hesitate, waiting for the other fellow to make the first move--- and he, in turn, waits for you. The minute a person whose word means a great deal dares to take the open-hearted and courageous way, many others follow. Marian Anderson (1897 - 1993)

Sevak,

Pictures of Flaviah are at Genocide Awareness, Rwanda Genocide Awareness, but perhaps the quickest way to find them would be in the Photos section f my own profile.

And for the hundredth time...how can there not be a section for photos here?
