I hope he will be given the respect due to a great man. Too bad the media attention is on a freak show right now.

Stuffit: "Johnson was the greater of the two evils"- well, everyone is entitled to their opinion. At least Johnson had the class to be quiet on the policies of his successor. If only Cheney can provide us the same quiet.

He was one of the greatest and under appreciated man in American history died. A brilliant mind who was one of the first to correctly identify with the enemy but was unfortunately labeled a warmonger.

I would imagine he was met at the Pearly Gates by about 53,000 guys who want to have a chat.

A man of immense controversies, RM, did have his own scholastic shiners, when he scored a perfect 800 in GMAT, an exam for admission to Business schools, in the US.

"External military force cannot reconstruct a failed state, and Vietnam, during much of that period, was a failed state politically," he told CNN in a 1996 interview for the "Cold War" documentary series. "We didn't recognize it as such." Hmmm...really? That's a shocker. What country does that remind me of...hmmm.

I used to hate that man. He was the symbol of the immorality of the Vietnam War. I think differently now. I invite others to view the documentary "Fog of War" and visit the website of the same name. It's an eye opening experience. RIP Bob. In the end, you did the right thing. Peace.

McNamara was a truly brilliant man. I hope that he'll be remember for the sum of his successes in the military, business and politics, not just his role in Vietnam.

Agent Orange, the Great Society, Brown and Root, etc., and the libs see Johnson as a guy that accomplished so much good during his presidency. Contrast that with Haliburton, "enhanced interrogation techniques" on three guys, and a "war for oil" and they call for Cheney's head. 4,000 troops lost vs. 56,000. In my book Johnson was the greater of the two evils. "Johnson announced he was replacing McNamara at the Pentagon and moving him to the World Bank. But by March 1968, Johnson had reached virtually the same conclusion as McNamara." Some things never change. Nixon, as reviled as he is by the left, ran on a platform in 1968 of ending the war, which he eventually did. But, we'll wait while the revisionists of history paint this differently.

Though the increasingly unpopular conflict was sometimes dubbed "McNamara's War," he later said both administrations were "terribly wrong" to have pursued military action beyond 1963. "External military force cannot reconstruct a failed state, and Vietnam, during much of that period, was a failed state politically," he told CNN in a 1996 interview for the "Cold War" documentary series. "We didn't recognize it as such." ---------------------------------------------------------------- I agree with the folks who think he is one....McNamara could have prevented a lot of deaths and suffering had he come out againist the Vietnam War once he became convinced that we were in the wrong once he became convinced of it in 1963. The war ended in 1975.
