After ascertainin' US security, if extra number of agin' missiles, warheads, and other battle weapons are reduced, there may be a place for smart, much less expensive weaponry, that may silence some of the harsh hawkish critics of arms reduction. You see whom we are talkin' about?

Obama didn't become President by being weak, as some of you weak-minded folks in this thread are claiming. He beat all odds and the Republican slime machine. Moreover, in the short time he's been in office the Republican party has self-destructed. That's as much a testament to what he brings to American politics as it is to the failure of conservatism as a political idealogy. Obama's not an ignorant blowhard and braggart like his predecessor. His strength and appeal is based on intelligence and knowledge of history and the world. He makes mistakes, No one is perfect. But at least he has the guts to admit them, unlike Bush who seemed confounded when asked to enumerate his shortcomings. Too bad some of you are too ideologically blinded by the inepitude of the right wing to recognize real leadership when it comes along.

United states is not the be all end all of countries with power or trying to acquire power. Other countries want nukes too. The only way to go about it is to reduce nuclear arms across the board. This is a good step by Russia and the U.S.

Have to agree with Bruce. Obama is a tool, a face, just to get votes for the demo's. The only thing this treaty is doing is renewing the old one. Whoopie... Russia has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world. So they will just have sell a few hundred warheads to meet the agreements of the treaty. Wonderful...

When negotiating with the Russians you need to be negotiating from a position of strength. The nuclear arms reduction negotiated by Reagan followed his defense buildup which the Russians couldn't match. They needed the reduction more than we did. Today with total lack of foreign policy success in Iran and North Korea, and our 'allies' refusing to help us more in Afghanistan despite Obama's kissing up to them, Obama needs success in Russia more than they do. Sure, we'll get a deal or maybe more than one. All more favorable to them.

Russia and China are no different from the US and they are not military threats as long as we don't overreach. It is our lazy, uneducated population that is the real threat to America. Internal degradation is the problem, not external threats. Iran and N. Korea are nothings, we have nothing to fear from them. Al Queda killed 3000+, if we hadn't overreached in Iraq, we'd be sitting pretty and Bin Laden would be dead.

Obama is a 90 lb weakling - and our adversaries know this. Russia will play Obama and then laugh at his naivete - as they did when Obama tried to offer up Poland's missile defense for "help" with Iran. Iran - calls Obama the 3rd Bush Presidency. North Korea - fires missiles and tests nuclear weapons without concern. Honduras - tells Obama to "besa mi culo" Europe - loves his speeches and then laughs at his demands to help with Iraq, Afghanistan, and contributing more $$. Looks like a fairly productive engagement. We must not get too excited though since treaties have to be ratified by Congress. I'm still awaiting ratification of the CTBT which directly affects my employment. So far, only lip service to CTBT, it is a pending issue (signed by Clinton in 1996, not ratified yet by Congress). I wish they would clean the slate of pending business before trying to engage in cap-and-trade and health care etc, etc.

I just fear that there's too much that needs to be done immediately for any president to achieve a worthwhile progressive agenda.

Russia is essentially by race, culture, and geography, a European country. It should be with NATO and the west, and we need to work with Russia on issues like international organized crime, the spread of weapons of mass destruction, terrorism, Iran, North Korea, etc..
