Sabrina Gibbs West's Notes

what am i doing wrong?

May 04, 2009 (8 months ago)

I just got a new bike Trek road bike from a comfort bike or hybrid. I was going around 14 miles and got as high as 30 on my old bike but I was on my 2nd mile and was so tired. I am wanting to go farther
1- The seat-I feel like I’m riding on a piece of slate. I know this is a matter of getting used to it.
2- The gears- they are not numbered like they are on “The Blue Banana” ;-) and I have no idea what gear I am on.that arrow does nothing for me. I need numbers!
3-speed- and I’m spending alot of time coasting..I go so much faster on this bike easier and seem to be pedalling air alot.
4 I get tired easier it rides so much smoother than my old bike. so I’m not sure why I’m tired unless its because I’m used to riding sitting upright and this is more leaned over. also it could be that it is so much easier to go faster

Also, I forgot to mention that many road bikes come with men's saddles, shop around and make sure you have the right one for your body.

A lot of it has to do with changes in your posture. Your body has to get used to it. You have to make sure the seat is in the correct position forward to backward as well as tilted correctly up and down. Where you're sitting over your peddles will affect your peddling and can make you feel weaker relatively to other set up that your body is used to riding. Also, road bikes are geared differently and require a bit higher level of fitness to push up to speed. Basically make sure that your saddle is the right height and forward position over your peddles and just keep riding. You'll get stronger and learn how to use the gear ratios that are particular to raod bikes.
