| Description: | An Investigation into the Role of Ice-Eating in Individuals with Iron Deficiency √ Are you anemic? √ Do you crave ice, ice chips or ice water? √ Does eating ice help you feel better? √ Ever wonder why? Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania are conducting a study to understand why it is that individuals with anemia crave and eat ice. Who can participate? Anyone age 18 and older who is anemic and eats a lot of ice, ice chips or drinks a lot of ice water is eligible to participate. What does this study entail? You will be asked to come to the University of Pennsylvania and complete a number of tasks – including tests of memory and reaction time on a computer game. You CANNOT eat ice or consume anything cold for at least ONE HOUR before participating. The study will take approximately one hour of your time. Either you can bring information with you about your hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels or we can contact your physician (with your consent), if that is easier for you. When can I participate? We are scheduling participants right now! Email Jessica Olli at olli@sas.upenn.edu to schedule a time. Will I be compensated in any way? Unfortunately, we are not able to pay you for your time. If you are interested, we can send you information about the results of our study. It is our hope that this study will help to explain why it is that individuals who have anemia tend to crave and eat ice. |
