Description: Two male Egyptian spiny mice for sale; these cuties are about 2 years old now (spinies can life for 5 years). Their names are Cute Guy and Kakashi. They are very entertaining to watch, especially when they go crazy over treats (such as mealworms and peanuts in the shell) and when they chase each other. These guys can get pretty rowdy at times! Whoever said "quiet as a mouse" didn't have spinies as pets. Like most rodents, spiny mice are nocturnal animals and come out to play in the evening. They have a very appealing, fox-like face with big eyes that kind of bug out (cute!) and grey, scaly tails that are much more attractive than the pink tails of many common mice and rats.
What to expect:
- Kakashi is typically the alpha male and is also the best out of the two to handle. Cute Guy, on the other hand, is a bit of a nipper, probably out of curiosity most of the time (watch your fingers!).
- Overall, these mice would need to be handled minimally at first until they get used to it again. We haven't handled them much since moving to our new apartment. You also need to have clean hands (i.e. freshly washed) when you handle them, as they are very sensitive to odors, and could end up biting you because of a weird smell on your hands.
- You cannot pick spinies up by the tail, as they have weak tails that break much more easily than the common Mus musculus mouse. Thus, to catch them, you must just scoop them up or get them to go into a toilet paper or paper towel cylinder to pick them up.
- For the above reasons, you should NOT even consider getting these mice for a kid under 12 years old.
- The mice have sometimes had some roommate issues with each other, and Cute Guy now looks a little rough around the edges (he has half a tail and some bits of ear missing to show for it). They have been fine since we put them in a bigger cage, though! This is the cage that is included in the price, and is super easy to clean.
- Owner must be able to clean their cage at least once every 3 weeks.
- Their food bowls (they eat birdseed, rodent seed mix, and dry cat food) need to be refilled every week. Veggies and fruit, such as bits of apples and carrots, as well as mealworms or crickets (obtainable at most pet stores) are good supplements to their diet. They also enjoy the occasional unsalted peanut, in the shell.
- They need to have hard things to chew on, such as wooden sticks, because rodent teeth grow continuously and need to be worn down by chewing rough materials; otherwise dental problems will occur!
*****Teachers: these mice would make an excellent classroom pet (recommended only for classrooms with students 12 years old and up -- e.g. in a middle school, high school, or even a college biology classroom)!*****
Price includes the mice, their cage, and related accessories (water bottles, running wheel, little houses, chew toys, sticks for them to climb on, and mouse hammocks), along with some food and Care Fresh litter. Price is negotiable! Make an offer.
Don't have time for them anymore now that I'm in grad school; we also don't have room in our apartment now.
Must go to a GOOD HOME where they will not be neglected or mistreated.
