to all people who are confused... the credit card balances are carried by banks.. NOT MC or V

Visa and Master Card actually get paid whether people default on their credit cards or not. They are an intermediary---the bank who issues the card, i.e. Corner Bank USA, pays Visa, or Master Card for their usage, but the banks themselves assume the risk of whatever the individual card holders owe on their card. Visa, and Master Card also receive a percentage of every transaction.

The earnings power for Visa (V) is actually positively impacted by rising unemployment...to a degree. The larger the default rate...the larger the write-off and the bigger tax benefit V will receive against residual earnings. Secondly, unemployment, and uncertainty in general, drives people to use cards more, although, since banks control the purse strings, as they are on the hook for defaults, banks no longer allow the average consumer to swap cards or transfer balances...this has all but stopped, and in the process eliminated the never ending transaction fees that V would collect as consumers continue to play a game of financial musical chairs. While the tax benefit works in the favor of V, and MA, the lower number of transactions have been cited by each company. I don't foresee this as a trend...if only a transition in the derivation of transactions and future growth.
