The Luis Buñuel Film Institute’s first film venture is a documentary based on a book by one of the world’s premiere screenwriters, Jean-Claude Carriere’s The Secret Language of Film. Published in 1994, Carriere turns a uniquely sophisticated and knowledgeable eye onto the evolution of the language of film over its first hundred years. The Luis Buñuel Film Institute’s first film venture is a documentary based on a book by one of the world’s premiere screenwriters, Jean-Claude Carriere’s The Secret Language of Film. Published in 1994, Carriere turns a uniquely sophisticated and knowledgeable eye onto the evolution of the language of film over its first hundred years. With great clarity and nimble wit, Carriere also reminiscences on his work with Luis Buñuel.
Carriere’s prodigious relationship with Luis Buñuel began with Diary of the Chambermaid, for which he co-wrote the screenplay (with Buñuel). Carrière and the director would collaborate on the scripts of nearly all Buñuel’s later films. He would continue to work with other distinguished such as Volker Schlöndorff, Philip Kaufman, Milos Forman, and Peter Brook.
The documentary will be directed by Juan-Luis Buñuel. In additon to new, entensive video interviews with Carriere, the documentary will draw from archival material—some of which has never been seen publicly—from Filmoteca espanola, Centro Bunel de Calanda, and the Buñuel estate.
