But why eat differently? Over the years, I have lost my connection to food. What used to be a relationship rich in flavors and deepened by sharing with friends and family became reduced to price, convenience, and too often, concerns about calorie content. This disconnection, I came to learn, was endemic in the United States, and has far-reaching consequences. Our eating choices are stretching an already distressed health care system. They are threatening the effectiveness of antibiotics, compromising our water supply, undermining the livelihood of communities, exploiting farm workers, and abusing animals.
Despite the rising media coverage of food-related stories, many people still remain unaware of the implications of our choices. And awareness does not always lead to a change in diet, I discovered. Exposure to the problems of our system failed to provide me with actionable solutions and my further research left me with countless new questions. What does “organic” really mean? Can I trust labels on food? Why is organic food so much more expensive? Can we feed a growing population without the industrial food system?
Really Delicious, a 56 min documentary, follows my personal journey through the heartland of America in the hopes of feeling connected again to the food I consume. As I travel the American landscape, I meet a diverse group of people who educate and inspire me. Each encounter addresses some of my questions and raises new ones. Each new question, in turns, leads me to the next stop on my journey and to unexpected discoveries. Eventually, my experiences help me realize that the way we eat is more than the cause for so many problems. Eating well enhance our pleasure, stimulates our social life, and improves our health. And as a growing number of people realize the impact of their food decision, it also has the potential to heal our land and revitalize our economy.
