Last week I was working on mixing down my new demos for an important meeting, but I couldn't get a babysitter for my two little boys. Luke and Joey came to the studio with me, but they were bored and a little nervous. At the last minute, we decided to replace my scratch vocals on "Alone" but the boys wouldn't let me go into the tracking room alone. (Which is ironic, because that's almost the way I came up with the song idea in the first place. Almost...)
So, they ended up sitting in the room with me, listening on headphones.
At about the second verse, Joey started talking about the microphone and the "hat" (his term for the headphones) and we ended up having to stop the pass. I turned around and talked to them both about being really quiet and listening to Mommy sing. I told them I'd take them out to ice cream after we were done working if they were really good boys and didn't talk or tell secrets or jump around.
The second pass at it, the boys were perfectly silent. I finished my tag, and as the note died away I couldn't believe our luck, or their good behavior!
Then, just as the sound of my last note was gone, Luke giggled and said "Mommy, sing again!" You can't make a 3-year-old do that on cue! It was precious, so we kept it, and you can hear it at the end of "Alone."
That's my boy, Luke, in his first Nashville studio session!
Motherhood is a blast!
