You never get a bad show from Brian Setzer. And last night's show was extra special because Royal Crown Review and The Ventures opened. I rarely get excited about opening acts, but RCR opened for BSO a few years back and I walked out wanting to buy all of their albums, so I knew I'd enjoy them. They were great! In their short set, I was familiar with most of the songs they did, several which were covers. Luck Be A Lady and When You're Smiling just to name a couple and they did throw in one Christmas song - Cool Yule. Lead singer Eddie Nichols is a colorful characte. Next up, The Ventures. What can I say? It was just a ton of fun to see them! Loved Hawaii 5-0, Pipeline, Wipeout and all the rest. Then....the MAN! Brian Setzer looked and sounded fabulous as always. His band is awesome. I can't describe it in words when all of the horns are wailing the feeling it brings. You really have to experience his band live. He plays the songs you expect to hear - Jump Jive An' Wail, Stray Cat Strut and Rock This Town plus you get a lot of Christmas standards - Blue Christmas, Run Rudolph Run, Jingle Bells. The audience is also treated to a surf guitar version of Angels We Have Heard On High which is a highlight of the show. The show stopper though, is The Nutcracker Suite. The band members get to show off their stuff during this one which include several of the guys getting well-deserved, even if short, solos. During the middle of the show, Brian, his bass player and drummer do a trio set a la Stray Cats and give the horn players a break until they are brought back to finish off Rock This Town. Brian does his OWN version of Pipeline, kind of a Polka Pipeline. It's pure entertainment to be a part of. Thanks for another great show, Brian. The BSO is playing again tonight at Gibson for anyone thinking about going. You won't be sorry! And you'll probably start making a habit out of going every year. Rock on!

Last night was probably one of the best, if not the best concert I've ever been to overall. It was also one of the best nights of my life. I mean, not only was Brian Setzer there with his orchestra, but I've never seen better opening bands than the ones that opened up for him. First band, right off the bat, The Royal Crown Revue, which appeared on The Mask and played Hey Pachuco when The Mask was dancing at that club. They were amazing. Both singers were great. A guy looking sharp and a beautiful woman who both sang some awesome swing music that was making me want to get up my chair and dance with the nearest woman. They even played "Love Be a Lady Tonight". I mean, swing music doesn't get much better than that. If that wasn't enough, next up was legendary surf rock instrumental band, The Ventures. I was in awe watching them play some sick riffs on the guitar and some amazing drumming, especially when they played Duke Ellington's "Caravan". I mean, just when I thought the show couldn't get any better, Brian Setzer comes out with his orchestra and tears the roof off. Playing several Christmas songs in his own swing style, such as Blue Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock, You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch (including an appearance by the Grinch, who was causing trouble like tearing people's music sheets and trying to steal a saxophone), and Jingle Bells. Not only that but he played some of his non-Christmas Orchestra songs as well as a Stray Cats set with just his drummer and bass player accompanying him. He played "Sexy and 17" (which was my favorite of the songs that he played), Stray Cat Strut, Fishnet Stockings, and then played Rock This Town in which he started off with the drummer and bass player, but then the whole orchestra started playing to finish it off. Like I said, overall this was probably the best show of my life. I'm definitely going back next year with my dancing shoes on and tickets for the orchestra pit/dance floor.

So much fun! Masterful guitar work! Can't decide what my favorite part was. The Nutcaracker Suite was mind bogglingly entertaining as usual!
