I highly highly doubt this reaches the guy that even gets coffee for R.E.M.'s roadies, but you ought to come play a show in Little Rock at a variety of indie venues and get down lo-fi and old school, with jangly guitars, do some gardening at night, make me crap my pants at the show. R.E.M. is a way of life for a wide variety of kids, adults, professionals period. There is no such thing as the music industry, rather nowadays it's all about moments whether they make it to the store or even the web. Tells Mills to bring his Rhodes piano or Wurlitzer and his beautiful voice (have you noticed that the longer you two sing together the more his voice favors yours and vice versa) which is a common consequence. Tell the dude with the rickenbacher not to forget his mandolin, and make it a night to remember. When Pearl Jam came out with the Fixer it sounded like rock and roll mattered again, but only to the extent we can all stand within feet of him as he belts it out. Same thing with you guys. Just do it; come here, come to Tulsa, invite us all to Athens and screw every record company that every existed. You've done it all, now do it for absolute fun. Rip your damn shirt off, bang a chair with a drum stick, have the invisible guy back you up on organ, and give us something to remember before it's too late. I saw Toad the Wet Sprocket at the New Daisy in Memphis (as well as Matthew Sweet and Smashing Pumpkins); I saw Travis and Jason Falkner at the Grenada in Dallas. Surprise everyone and take it back to basics. I always thought if Michael Jackson would have put together a four piece band and started rocking indie shows, it would have produced true art. I saw Sondre Lerche at Vino's in L.R., a venue all local acts play and give you that feeling that you might as well be drinking at the bar 50 yards away as much as you should be on stage. The right audience will show and will cry with relief that you've proven R.E.M. puts on a great live show whether it's in a back yard or in a stadium. Do it. Do it. Hey, Do it. Come on.
