well, in reference to Oldham's own quote:
He changed his names and monikers a lot because he felt that if he had held the same name, people should/ would expect the same sounding music. since he didn't produce the same sounding music, he changed what he called himself. Palace, Palace Brothers, Palace songs, Palace music, Bonnie "prince" billy, or just will oldham.
That's probably lengthier than you wanted, though.

There isn't a lot of difference. In Palace he was officially in a band but in his solo work he often works with the same people.
