Songs for a New World is a work of musical theatre written and composed by Jason Robert Brown. The show sits on the boundary between musical and song cycle, but it is neither; it is an abstract musical, a series of songs all connected by theme rather than narrative. The show employs four performers who do not literally play the same characters throughout the show but who do have consistently developing character arcs nonetheless. It is far more than a revue or song cycle but it's not a standard narrative book musical. Composer Jason Robert Brown has said of his show, "It's about one moment. It's about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back".

This got me thinking where I found out about Jason Robert Brown. For as long as I could remember, my uncle has had the Parade CD...but I never listened to it. I bought the Last 5 Years CD because I was LOVED Norbert Leo Butz's voice (cause of wicked) and I LOVED it! I listened to that CD NON STOP, never knowing he wrote other stuff...Till my friend Taylor sang "I'm Not Afraid of Anything" in my school's cabaret. Now I own and listen to the Songs for a New World and Parade CDs along with my Last 5 years one. JRB is my FAVORITE composer and I cannot wait to hear more things from him and get his other CDs!

I was introduced to him by a traveling theatre group who came through my local theatre, and they gave me a copy of some of his best work. Parade, The Last Five Years, Songs for a New World, Songs of Jason Robert Brown, and Wearing Someone Else's Clothes, are the albums that I now have. I think he is the greatest composer of our time, because his music and lyrics move my soul and makes me want to scream out loud with joy. I love him, and his music. JRB, I hope one day I can be 1/100 as talented as him.
