I play this game where you pick an artist, and then try to think of the song you would most like to hear them cover. I know, really out there, right? But it can be really difficult to nail it. It helps if you take an artist who at first blush doesn't seem to match.
For instance, Bruce Springsteen. The man can cover anything, right? I think the ultimate cover for the Boss is "Dirty Diana" by Michael Jackson. Unquestionably the greatest MJ song, and the only person on earth who could pos... More...

For instance, Bruce Springsteen. The man can cover anything, right? I think the ultimate cover for the Boss is "Dirty Diana" by Michael Jackson. Unquestionably the greatest MJ song, and the only person on earth who could possibly outdo him is the other titan of the times: The Boss.
Seriously, Bruce seething over the lines, "you never make me stay, so take your weight offa me..." and "you've been here times before, but i was too blind to see." The boss was BUILT for this song. I can't even believe MJ wrote it.
Which brings me to Ms. Apple, who is my unquestionable favorite female artist of forever. Ms. Apple has that same kind of boss-esuqeness - I'll call it "songstress" element about her where she can really put more emotion that you're comfortable hearing behind the lyrics. The material has to live up to the artist, know what I mean?
Anyway, I'm here pouring over my "classics" in a coffee shop, and I ran across Bonni Tylers "Total Eclipse of the Heart." I don't know what to think. It's cheesy, poppy, melodramatic and overdone... But i can't get the idea of a left-it-all-on-the-table Apple rendition ending with that humming scream, "we;re livin in a powder keg and givin off sparks... i fuckin need you tonight.... forever's gonna start tonight..."
Admit it, it would be kinda rad. I'd pay for it.
