John Martin was recently 'praised' by tha Black Crowes who covered "over the hill", not to down play JM, but Bert has been referenced by Neil Young ("Hendrix on the acoustic guitar"), Jimmy Page, Johnny Marr,... I've had the divine pleasure of experiencing Berts virtuoso performances at both the Pleasance in 1998 & tha Queens Hall in 2004. I really liked Black Swan & look forward to hearing from Bert in tha future,.. Aw tha besht!!

I met Bert Jansch before his show at Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia. I was at the bar and he and his wife were at the table behind me, eating. I wasn't expecting to run into him so I didn't think of what to say. When I did manage to say something, I said something about how all the music I like is either him or sounds like him. He nodded and said, "I hope you enjoy the show." He also signed my copy of "Sweet Child." I offered him the back cover to sign and he said, "Are you sure you want me ... More...

He nodded and said, "I hope you enjoy the show." He also signed my copy of "Sweet Child." I offered him the back cover to sign and he said, "Are you sure you want me to sign there?" I said "Yes," puzzled at his question. I realized later that he probably wanted to sign the picture of himself on the inside, which I had forgotten about. During the show, he told a story about John Renbourne and himself meeting a woman with animals living in her hair in Paris, and he followed it by saying, "That has nothing to do with the next song." From the moment I spotted him at the table until the end of the show, his facial expression barely changed. If you check any recent pictures of him, he has that same face. I got my picture taken with him and I made an extremely embarassing face. I was about 15 feet from the stage and he was both underwhelming and overwhelming. Everything about the man and his music is both simple and not normal at all.
