Hi awesome people,
Each week for the next few weeks, I'm going to be sending out mini-song-synopses. I like to follow my intuition to find out if the ideas it gives me are crazy or sane so we'll see...wait for it, wait for it ;-)... So, if you need a 5 minute break at work, you can hang out with me once a week. This week's song "Where Your Scar Is" may be familiar to you because it was in the YouTube video, but they won't all be like that. Next week will be "Out to Sea" (more of a B side ;-) [and my favorite song on the album!].
Love, Anne

i.
Sister off she went
And it hurt your heart
So you buried it
Deep inside your chest
Under the papers on your desk
And I know this
That your love lives where your scar is
And I know why
Even when I'm right next to you I feel lonely sometimes
I try to wake you up
Spitting out insults
But they just bounce off your forehead
I learned not to use kind words
Never use kind words
They just scare you away
And I know this
That your love lives where your scar is
And I know why
Even when I'm right next to you I feel lonely sometimes
Sometimes the most important thing
Between two people goes unsaid
And for us it was that happiness lie ahead
We believed this so completely
In the end it would defeat me
For all I ever wanted was your love
And I know this
That your love lives where your scar is
And I know why
Even when I'm right next to you I feel lonely sometimes

ii. Q & A
What do you like most about this song?
---It reminds me of the Sound of Music! For some reason, "Where Your Scar Is" reminds me of "Edelweiss" which is a song about a native white flower from Austria (who knew how moving THAT could be?) from that play/movie. I guess they both feel a little bit like lullabyes to me. What do you think?
What food does this song remind you of?
---Corn on the cob! Definitely. Because corn on the cob is eaten at a family barbecue. It could be dusk, there are many smells. Maybe you go in the house and know this time with people you love is precious and yet fleeting. Maybe you know too that no matter how much you love people, it's hard to get close to them across a picnic table eating burgers. Maybe this is okay. Maybe you like to chew all the little kernels of corn...there always seem to be more until there are no more.
What color is this song?
---Light blue and pink. The colors of cotton candy.
What animal does this song remind you of?
---A deer

~Writing...
---This song is actually a rewrite of "I Know This," a song that I wrote while listening to a Yankees game that was on my last EP "I Know This." The lyrics were almost exactly the same BUT the song had purely piano accompaniment and had a pretty sad sounding melody :(
A year or so later, a friend of mine from Florida mentioned how one of the melody parts had a soaring, hooky, lullabye feel to it and he asked me why I didn't repeat that part. It was a good question. I started playing around with a reggae beat and completely changed the verse melodies and made them much happier sounding. Then I found a part of the chorus to repeat. Also, like I said, singing this song reminds me of Edelweiss from the Sound of Music. I always want to sing it 2nd to last too (like the Von Trapps sing that song 2nd to last before they escape from Austria and the Nazis)- wow, this is quite an elaborate fantasy. Anyway, I am a big fan of happy music with sad lyrics because when I hear other people perform those songs live, I notice it can be energy-giving instead of depleting even though the topic might be sad.
~Recording...
Frank Marotta, Jr. finger-picked the song on a nylon string guitar. I sang the song quietly into a microphone and imagined I wasn't so much singing it as whispering it to someone. Gary Maurer did some guitar playing on the solo section and Rose Polenzani sang back up vocals. Later Rose began to perform it with me live on ukelele. We also made a video out of this song with her playing her pink ukelele (I LOVE PINK UKELELE!) that was featured on the YouTube homepage.
