One of the best John Wayne movies I have seen from the starting train gold theft by the confederates to the classic ending gun fights. It is awesome.

La secuencia inicial del tren deja en evidencia el talento intacto del director para rodar con pulso firme y sin complicarse demasiado, logrando un resultado perfecto. El tronco argumental se rige por Rio Bravo y El Dorado, que si bien no llega a los niveles de perfeccion de esas obras, resulta ser un entretenido y eficaz filme de accion, con mucho humor. Buena.

Wonderful western from the legendary director Howard Hawks, with John Wayne lending his typically monolithic presence to a story of treachery, honour, friendship and loyalty in the west. Supremely entertaining.

Here's another quote from O'Neill's autobiogaphy that I believe: "Although I was intent on becoming a good actress, it was never the center of my focus." Indeed... She and Jorge Rivero were terrible, though it was clear that English was not Rivero's first (maybe even second) language. As for Ms. O'Neill, she gives Ricky Nelson a run for his money in the bad acting department. Her excuse is that she was young, inexperienced, and had a lot going on in her life at the time (according to some sources, she's been married nine times-NINE TIMES). In any case, the best thing about this flick is John Wayne; he's comfortably in command in a role he's played countless times before--basically, John Wayne. There are some other notables in the cast, too, but not to the degree of this movie's previous iterations ("Rio Bravo" and "El Dorado"). Instead of Robert Mitchum, we get his son Christopher. Future Paramount Pictures studio chief Sherry Lansing appears as Scar Girl, who has kind of a racy scene with Rivero. And writer George Plimpton plays Gunman No. 4. Not exactly Dean Martin and Angie Dickinson, unfortunately, but at least there's no James Caan chinking it up. For that alone, I rate it above "El Dorado."

Super! Jennifer O'Neil was not good, though. In fairness, though, it was her first movie. John Wayne was John Wayne...great as always.

The third time Hawks has made this movie, this feels like a good-bye. Duke has lost a step. Not a lot of fun.
