The cat & mouse games between Bronson and Jobert escalate and shift in tone drastically, keeping the viewer challenged. The flash backs and forward are handled briefly, and without condescension. Francis Lai's score is terrific, establishing a moody atmosphere while punctuating dramatic scenes well.

Everything is not what it seems and the dialogue is a strange mix of non sequitors and cliches. Not for everyone but a really interesting artsy noir for those who dig 60's style crime melodrama.
