The tires of a baby-blue 53 Cadillac Coupe de Ville convertible squeal down the New York street, and none of its occupants looks back. The beautiful but mercurial Ann Devereaux (Renée Zellweger) has just left her philandering husband Dan Devereaux (Kevin Bacon), a society bandleader, and taken to the road with her teenage sons, George (Logan Lerman) and Robbie (Mark Rendall), in search of a wealthy replacement mate. Although its 1953, Ann is certain that her girlish charms will serve her as well as they did two decades earlier.
But time has marched on since Anns courting days, and it seems that the losers and playboys outnumber the eligible and willing bachelors. Ann never gives up hope, but a series of new schools for the boys, ever more humble lodgings and romantic misadventures start to take the gloss off their trip. Yet Ann is indefatigable, her pride matched by the flighty enthusiasm of her older son Robbie, a flamboyant boy who believes he is meant for a life on the stage, and the cynical wit of George, an observant aspiring writer. As the miles roll by, their journey veers from eccentric, to hair rising, to poignant, to comic.
From her impulsive choices to the downright bizarre characters they meet on the road, Ann steers her sons on a narrow highway between excitement and panic. But ultimately, George discovers the determination, dignity and love underneath his mothers narcissistic exterior. And Ann makes a different future for herself and her sons than any of them had imagined.

It just does not quite come together. But, it is a sweet film, with great actors and great fashion. I am also a sucker for movies that involve road trips
" I often think about those months we spent on the road together trying to find someone to take care about us. What we found instead was that we didn't need anyone else that we could take care of ourselves just fine..."

Unfortunately, she finds that time has moved on.The men she comes into contact with are, well, not the marrying kind.Through al, the difficult times, she tells her sons not to worry, things will work out. They do.In a manner that does not involve her having to find a husband. This is supposed to be based on the life of actor George Hamilton, who in this movie is Anne's younger son.
I like the idea of taking the road through America in fantastic Cadillac but the story hasn't attracted me much - it's rather boring
Really well done. I love renee's character. And the gay guy....I wonder if he is gay in real life? If not...coulda fooled me.....worth the watch for sure.

Muddled adaptation of the childhood of tanned actor George Hamilton. The production looks nice and the actors are all fine, but it never quite decides who the story is really about.
one of the better movies i had never heard of. renee zellweger looks like a white eskimo.

But it is a superb romp from one side of the states to the other. Renee Zellweger is supposedly more "interesting" than "gorgeous" which I guess means she has to be able to act. And act she does. She takes a character which in anyone else's hands would be a cartoon and turns her into a real flesh and blood human being who just happens to be stunning and have an unconscious sense of comedic timing most comedians would die for. Supporting cast is excellent without exception. And there is more than a little bit of serious philosophy buried between the lines of the excellent screenplay. There is therapy for whatever ails you in this film.
Critic Reviews
A grand, colorful coming-of-age story with a candy box color palette and a standout performance by Renée Zellweger. It's a great story and a great crowd-pleaser.full review
My One and Only is like a tale told by a first-rate raconteur, its twists and turns all the more intriguing because it's all true -- more or less.full review
This isn't exactly untraveled territory, but director Richard Loncraine makes this potentially familiar story fresh...full review
Basing psychological speculation on a biopic is notoriously risky. All I can say is that after seeing My One and Only, Hamilton's persona somehow clicked into place for me.full review
Flouncing across the country like Miss Piggy, Renée Zellweger makes My One and Only a fabulous bore.full review
My One and Only is an affectionate picture, set in the early 1950s, that coasts breezily on its charm and style.full review
My One and Only has an old-fashioned sensibility making for a pleasantly diverting road movie.full review
Aimed directly at the older audiences who remember when movies effortlessly mixed hilarity, family drama and sentiment without blinking an eye, My One and Only is that rare kind of comedy that doesn't come around very often anymore.full review
