Movies by their nature are artificial and that is a huge hurdle that films constantly try to overcome to get people emotionally invested. I immediately connected with the three leads and cared deeply to what happened to each of them. There's a moment in the film that I think shows the power of cinema and it's ability to get an emotional response from the audience. The particular moment I'm talking about had me in tears and I felt like an emotional wreck afterwards. On a critical level there are aspects that would benefit the film if they were fixed (longer running time, depth to supporting characters) but because the movie gave me such an emotional response, one that I seldom feel in other films I give the movie a pass. Tobey Maguire gives one of the best performances of the decade. You may not know everything about this character but one look at him and you feel everything he feels and that's all that is really necessary.
Surprisingly Good, Especially As I'm Not A Fan Of Any Of The Three Lead Actors, Acting Wise. Although Not Wholly Original It Succeeds In Falling Into Certain Story Conventions And Features Some Great Acting By The Two Young Girls.
Some good acting here maybe a nominee for Tobey but I think the other actors might have to sit out this time around. Bailee Madison (the older daughter) was probably the best actor in the piece. A good movie in this genre but not the greatest.
Brothers - family rivals? One good; one moody? Love triangle? Or just a misunderstanding during a time of war?
Precious little to see here beyond competent performances. Move along. Next.
I really liked it, it's powerful and emotional depicting the bond between two brothers. One the spitting image of his father, carrying on the family's military legacy, the other an underachiever who has just returned from jail.

Tobey Maguire is awesome as a psychologically disturbed marine :D

As I suspected, its premise is similar to "Pearl Harbor" but there are more differences than I originally thought. Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman don't fall madly in love during Tobey Maguire's absence, but they are attracted to each other at least somewhat. I'm kind of glad they didn't take it "there", now that I think about it. The film probably would have went downhill if that happened. Tobey Maguire is nothing short of fantastic as Sam. The scene in the kitchen was intense. I had no idea what was going to happen. Gyllenhaal is really likeable as the black sheep in the family, Tommy. He's a charming rascal and it's easy to see how he eventually wins over his brother's family. Natalie Portman delivers a pretty subdued performance as the hurting not-quite widow. She doesn't overact, yet she still has a presence. Just great acting all around. If you don't want to see it at all, the performances may be just enough to tide you over.

Critic Reviews
Sheridan declines the dissociative artiness and blame that hipster filmmakers use to exempt themselves from today's wars.full review
An almost-good movie weakened by its desire to have a major impact, as melodramatic material is heated to boiling over.full review
Brothers itself -- a smart, well-meaning project -- never quite pulls itself together.full review
Sheridan is a consistently agile storyteller, drawing strong performances from even the youngest actors.full review
In a role without any flamboyant touches, playing what is essentially just a decent, intelligent woman, Portman lends the film dignity, understanding and true radiance.full review
The film packs a wallop. Too bad about the missteps. It could've been a knockout.full review
Brothers has all the right ingredients -- it's made with care, and it works very well. But it rarely finds the raw intensity that the Danish original did; adding a little polish, in this case, took away a bit of the grit.full review
Brothers is a heartbreaking film that speaks to the lifelong aftershocks of war, and to the powerful bonds of family and of love.full review
Sheridan shapes the drama so casually that he succeeds in making it feel naturalistically unshaped.full review
This becomes Tobey Maguire's film to dominate, and I've never seen these dark depths in him before. Actors possess a great gift to surprise us, if they find the right material in their hands.full review
