(read more) Unlike the majority of remakes, The Wizard of Gore remake stays true to the intentions of the original while simultaneously expanding upon it radical and original ways. Herschell Gordon Lewi's's cult classic original functions on only the most basic level--it is a film filled with gore, with bodies being torn apart and innards being played with. As with all H.G. Lewis films, it is badly acted, poorly filmed, and generally reprehensible to all except those, such as this reviewer, who adore the true deviants of cinema history. The remake of The Wizard of Gore is another matter entirely--it stays true to the original's basic plot premise but it expands it into radically new territories. Instead of a simple gorefest, The Wizard of Gore remake is a film about illusion versus reality--it is a surrealistic mind-trip in a manner similar to David Cronenberg or David Lynch. Yet it still holds true to Lewis's basic operating paradigm: to titillate the audience. Aside from the gory mutilation scenes, Kasten's remake also features ample T&A thanks to the participation of The Suicide Girls who lend to the punk/post-punk/goth aesthetic of the film. In other words, the film blends cerebral levels together with exploitation aspects without ever taking itself too seriously or becoming too silly. No doubt, it is aided in this enterprise by the performance of Crispen Glover as the magician who makes the role both sinister, hilarious, and provocative--there are messages behind his madness and illusions. Indeed, The Wizard of Gore suggests that there are realities we must all awake from because society forces us to live within a series of nested illusions.
The additional 0.5 star because it was better than I expected it to be. Cast may not be the greatest (with Kip as the lead here seems a bit wierd) but interesting storyline and though title suggested GORE - it didn't exactly spell gore.

So fans of gore may be a tad disappointed but to me the idea was brought acrossed nicely, surreal and not too overboard :)
Good effects and Crispen Glover make it worth a look. Other then that, it's a convoluted mess of a movie.
Started off surprisingly well, was even going moderately good up until that poor ending. Yes, the twist was fine, but that ending was not.
Repetitive and really goes nowhere. Not really confusing at all if you have half a brain in your head. Get ready to hear the sound of knuckles cracking all the time. That's not annoying at all.
Also, Crispin Glover has a giant package in this film.
Um, no. When Bijou Phillips is too good for your film, you've got to realise there's a problem. This film think it's clever, when in reality it's just one great big mess.
A remake, and bad one at that, of a low rate 70's exploitation movie by HG Lewis.

By the mere choice of cast members I can only assume that this remake was going for the same level of shlocky acting as the original. The problem is that this seems to believe it is telling a far more profound tale than it actually achieves.
A shocking choice of inept actors spliced to a ropey screenplay leads to a truely horrific outcome thread bare in any redeeming quality.....perhaps I should have known better from the title and the apperience in the credits of mister Crispin Glover who puts the shit into shitty acting, but i felt compelled to watch and slate never the less.
That said I watched this sorry tale on the same night as the later X-files movie and to be fair this is still better than the x-files latest effort.
Worth watching for Crispin Glover's magical performance. Crappy otherwise. Jeffrey Combs is completely wasted. Brad Dourif does what he can with a crap part.
It was just what I wanted it to be. Fans of Naked Lunch won't be disappointed!

But it takes its budget limitations in stride, with nice touches in five or so cheap sets. The first 40 minutes is a lot of girls getting naked and then getting gored, but it continues to be a misogyny stew from top to tail even when it's struggling to have a plot. Glover plays Glover with a dash of the sword work he learned for CHARLIE'S ANGELS, but it's cool to see Joshua John Miller (of RIVER'S EDGE and NEAR DARK) all grow'ed up as Jinky, the quirky coroner.

This excellent movie comes from the director of The Attic Expedition and he is Jeremy Kasten. Crispin Glover stars as an illusionist who performs bloody tricks to people, well to "Suicide Girls". Kip Pardue plays Edmund, who tries to solve the murders of the "victims" of the show. Genre veterans Joshua Miller, Brad Dourif and Jeffrey Combs show up to give their contribution to this project. One of the best movies in this year and one of top-10 remakes ever.
