âSomebody has to be the dining bitch,â while sitting in a diner with his younger brother who is home from college for Thanksgiving I was sold. The film continues to follow Calebâs depression from a supposed recent breakup with his girlfriend. A girlfriend we are only exposed to through beautiful quick cuts to flashbacks of moments in their relationship. These images only seem to happen when Caleb falls asleep, despite him claiming he has not slept in weeks. The score is beautiful it sounds like Red Stars Theory. Brittany Snow plays Emma Calebâs younger brotherâs girlfriend. Her jet black hair and blue eyes and punk rock aesthetic depicts a type of girl Caleb thinks he knows. A type of girl Caleb tries to warn his brother Peter (Alex Frost) about. During their Thanksgiving break Peter and Emma stay with Peter and Calebâs father. Awkwardness ensues and familial drama makes things even more complex. There is a supermarket scene with Caleb and Emma that seems to torture the viewer. Brutal, brilliant, and bruising. Caleb begins falling for his younger brotherâs girlfriend and the feeling is vaguely returned. Awkwardly long fucking scenes and darky comedic moments played brilliantly by Adam Scott. Sea Wolf and Bon Iver are just a few of the artists that appear on the soundtrack that seem to weave perfectly with the beautiful score. When the credits started to roll, I shouldnât have been surprised that Neil LaBute was the executive producer. Its desperation, womanizing, and realistic portrayal of human relationship has Neil LaBute fingerprints all over it. After consulting IMDB.com I realized that the director actually worked for him while studying at USC.
if Adam Scott doesn't get an oscar nod, I'm goin postal. just warning you. what a crazy film. feel sorry for Emma thrown into the mix such a messed up family. not pleasant, but great story, with great acting

this is a story of a man unable to not only deal with the emotional baggage he carries courtesy of those closest to him, but also to hold accountability for the pain he himself is causing. but he tries. in his own weird way.
the supporting cast is just as engaging. j.k. simmons is great as the estranged father, and even brittany snow has some scenes that really impressed me.
i truly hope people seek this film out. i doubt it'll show up much in theaters, or even wide on dvd. but it's a keeper. for fans of garden state, wonder boys, the squid and the whale, and a darker dan in real life.
|Pretty powerful, good story. It was quite depressing but had a few comedic moments too, just to try and make you smile in the midst of being sad. Was very real too, which I was impressed with
I was curious to see this since Adam Scott got a surprise nomination from the Indies. It's your typical dysfunctional family getting together for Thanksgiving. Maybe what made this interesting were the actors playing atypical roles.
one of my favourites of the year, and my favourite of the Canberra international film festival so far. after seeing Adam Scott in Party Down & Tell Me You Love Me, I've got to say he's now one of the actors I look forward to watching.

Adam Scott, plays the older brother who in his post breakup state detests women. He meets his brother's girlfriend on a thanksgiving trip back home. He is drawn to protect his brother but at the same time finds himself extremely sexually attracted to his brother's girlfriend. The movie takes many twists and turn but in the end one important lessons remains. If you love someone, sometimes it is better to just let things be.

I can't say this was a completely original story. But it did avoid being cliched and trite. The performances were incredible, particularly from Adam Scott, who wowed me from the start. I had trouble believing that Emma -- so dynamic and charming -- could be a virgin. It was more interesting to believe that beneath the surface she was more like the carping Caleb than his innocent younger brother.
