In his most powerful performance to date, Ben Foster stars as Will Montgomery, a U.S. Army officer who has just returned home from a tour in Iraq and is assigned to the Armys Casualty Notification service. Partnered with fellow officer Tony Stone (Woody Harrelson) to bear the bad news to the loved ones of fallen soldiers, Will faces the challenge of completing his mission while seeking to find comfort and healing back on the home front. When he finds himself drawn to Olivia (Samantha Morton), to whom he has just delivered the news of her husband's death, Wills emotional detachment begins to dissolve and the film reveals itself as a surprising, humorous, moving and very human portrait of grief, friendship and survival.
Featuring tour-de-force performances from Foster, Harrelson and Morton, and a brilliant directorial debut by Oren Moverman, THE MESSENGER brings us into the inner lives of these outwardly steely heroes to reveal their fragility with compassion and dignity.

Ben Foster and especially Woody Harrelson both shine in their roles. However, the film is a bit bogged down by the unfocused and undeveloped romance between two unlikely people. The cinematography, while definitely going for realism, is actually pretty shoddy.

"Bullets fly; soldiers die"
Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster powerfully depict the shattering aftermath of war games damage in a crushingly honest way.
"I'd like to strap her on and wear her like a government-issued gas mask."
Damn Woody Harrelson. Ben Foster certainly has come a long way since "Flash Forward" (1996).

Ben Foster's first lead role puts him besides Ryan Gosling as another great, serious young actor. The movie shows the tough job of being the "angels of death", as well as different heart-wrenching reactions from the NOK (next of kin). Oscar buzz: Woody as supporting actor, always terrific Samantha Morton as supporting actress.
This one was really good, mainly because it tells a very sensitive side of military life that doesn't get much play time.

Telling a story we have not seen before, you get a sense of how the families and the men who have to tell them feel about hearing their loved one has died in war. The film takes no position on being pro or anti war; it just tells the story. The 1st half of the film is excellent, but unfortunately the script starts to wonder & it becomes obvious that the write was not sure how to end the film. There a few scenes that do not quite work. There may have been other scenes that did not make the final cut that would have cleared up some inconsistencies. All in all it is a moving film that is worth seeing.

Critic Reviews
Oren Moverman's sober and satisfying drama shows how the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have created a fissure in American society.full review
Messengers with the worst possible message, they nonetheless manage to be human and alive .... In a film that itself bears sad tidings about the costs of war, that is an affirming, even an inspiring, gift.full review
The Messenger, showing humanity under siege, opens wounds inflicted by the Iraq War -- not on the battlefield but in the hearts of the families of soldiers who never made it back home.full review
So bungled up with fashionable ambivalence about the Iraq War that every single behavioral detail is not just prejudicial but wrong.full review
Moverman's scripting is subdued and emotionally authentic.full review
