Georgia (Nia Vardalos) is a Greek-American tour guide who leads an assorted group of English, Australian and American tourists around Greece. Tourists who would rather buy a T-shirt than learn about history. In a hysterical clash of personalities and culture, everything seems to go wrong. I was only impressed with the architecture & the historical sites of Greece in the movie. Everything else in the movie seems to be lacking in substance.
didn't really know what to expect from this but i totally didn't get the romcom vibe until the end and even then it still wasn't bad. not as good as 'greek wedding' but it was enjoyable. loved the old lady thief and 'irv'.
This was a cute, non-thinking, but nice story. It's one you can watch and do other things and still enjoy it.
man talk about being pigeonholed into a role, is everything nia vardalos going to do have to have greek or greece involved

But then I tried to watch it for the story and yuck! It shouldnât have turned out this way! The premise of the movie is pretty clever and is one that many of us can relate to, because we have been around tourists from hell, and whatâs more amusing than seeing a tour guide trying to deal with them? Alas, it succumbed to the bad stereotypes, oversimplified solutions and Hallmarkian dialogues. At least Adventureland is about smart people being stupid; My Life In Ruins is about stupid being stupid.
Hilarious movie... laughed during the whole film.... great actors/actresses... so funny!!!
It has more failures than successes because it's not funny when it thinks it is.
Critic Reviews
Think of Shirley Valentine and take away charm, wit, realism and Pauline Collins.full review
As a travelogue of Greece, it's swell but the script feels like a warmed-over episode of "The Love Boat".full review
Half the time I wanted everyone to shut up so I could hear the tour guide lecture on the Temple of Hephaestus, or wherever. Then I wanted them to shut up so I could sleep.full review
A romantic comedy that bathes in clichés before rinsing off with sentimentality and spritzing itself with lame jokes. The result is, alas, a bit whiffy.full review
My Life in Ruins plays out more like a thuddingly bad, been-there, seen-that sitcom. Even the sight of breathtaking ancient monuments don't keep it from crumbling.full review
Rarely has a film centered on a character so superficial and unconvincing, played with such unrelenting sameness. I didn't hate it so much as feel sorry for it.full review
