The plot of this series forces us to look into the depths of morality, and our very souls. If you discovered a book that allowed you to kill anyone you wanted, (As long as you new their name and could picture thier face), what would you do with it? Would you keep it safe from evil doers? Or would you kill ever single criminal on the planet?
Well our main charactor decides to do just that. The series follows Light Yagami as he passes his own brand of justice on the world. Using the supernatural Death Note, Light begins killing every criminal he can get a name and picture for. (I'm not explaining the rules for the Death Note here, watch the series and it will be very easy to understand). After Light has killed countless criminals he discovers that a mysterious "detective" known only as L, is trying to catch him. Thier two brilliant minds become locked in a spectacular battle of wits that never lets up. Most people think, well thats just a cartoon so it cant be all that great. Y O U R W R O N G!
This is a fantastic psychological thriller! If you enjoy Hannibal Lector, then this is right up your alley. The supernatural twist gives a fresh perspective to an already fantastic murder mystery story. Think about it, The killer's weapon of choice is a God of Deaths Notebook. Yet those who are deterimined to catch him, Must rely on regular investigative techniques and intuition! Can they possibly hope to catch him? If they do, what kind of evidence could you possibly use to convict him?
Well I know how it all turns out, but you have to watch all 37 episodes to find out. You'd be a fool to miss it!
The only reason this series doesnt recieve full 5 stars is because half way through the series they changed the opening theme to this god awful, hardcore, acid trip, my brain is melting type theme. Which if your familiar with the story up to that point, doesnt suit the plot at all.

The show is not about insanity, Light is a murderer yes, but he's not bang your head on a brick wall, cheese grate your face off type insane.
He's cool and quiet about what he does.

i loved the fact that they used half the first move for the first 2 albums.. i loved the movie and the manga but not so much the anime..

But then I watched two more episodes in transit and the characters have grown on me as the storyline grew more complex. It still feels dragged out too much and some pauses do not feel necessary. But overall this is indeed a decent anime, at least insofar as ideas are concerned. Morality is also played on with a very fluid artistry - the fact that some of the audience will likely also sympathize with the serial killer, Kira, or the almost-but-not-quite morally ambivalent shinigami, mirroring the reactions from within the series itself, is quite a clever accomplishment. Oh, and find a good translation if you don't speak Japanese as I had to go through three before it felt watchable...

With over thirty episodes, it can become quite tedious at points. Whilst a greater emphasis was focused on "L" which is by no means a bad thing, the character development of Near seamed rushed and caused me to lose interest. Apart from this, the idea of this becoming a hollywood film would not go amiss. Whether they can fit it into 2 and a half hours though is a big ask. Also, Misa Misa is irritating, its almost like they have took the stereotype for a japanese teenager and made her from that basis alone.

Great movie. It was interesting to see an anime condensed in a movie. Well made, well constructed but a bit tiring...

Great series, I hope more people get to see it sometime. Why is there such a long gap between the DVD releases? It's been a few months since it finished airing on Adult Swim!
