If you know Anderson from The Royal Tenenbaums, or Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, you might think an animated children's book would be an odd choice of film for him. Oddly enough, it isn't. Several little Wes Anderson directorial trademarks find their way into Fantastic Mr. Fox: for one, there's Bill Murray, for another there's Jason Schwartzman and Owen Wilson. There's also some familiar sounding exchanges between characters, a difficult father/son relationship, and some awkward teen angst as well, only all these characters are of the animated fox variety. Anderson also continues his trend of focusing on one classic band's music for the soundtrack (David Bowie for Steve Zissou, The Kinks for Darjeeling Limited), in this case it's the Beach Boys. All these quirky elements are generally hit-and-miss for Anderson's other "real life" films, but in an animated setting, they give the film it's charm and humor.
Based on the novel by author Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), The Fantastic Mr. Fox is the story of a super athletically fantastic fox (George Clooney) who gives up a life of chicken thievery (he also steals squabs, even though he's not exactly sure what they are) in order to settle down and raise a family in the fox equivalent of the suburbs. When they move to a new home that's within sight of three of the biggest farms in the land, he decides to come out of retirement for "one big score". Things are complicated by his awkward son who likes to wear capes, and the arrival of his nephew, the amazingly talented Kristofferson. All the animals live in a very human world: Mrs. Fox likes to paint landscapes that involve distant lightning striking, the badger (bill murray) also works as a lawyer, the opossum is the superintendent of their house, they wear collars and ties, and all these humanistic traits are fully recognized by the actual humans, the farmers even have negotiations with the animals (it's odd that dogs and chickens don't seem to operate on the same level though). The movie is at all times self aware, (the characters don't use profanity, they simply say the word "cuss" as an all encompassing swear word) and the dialogue is smart and funny while still maintaining it's innocence, and that's a tough combination of things to do in a modern film. Fantastic Mr. Fox is arguably the best film by Wes Anderson to date.
Such a surprisingly pleasant movie-going experience. A "family" flick that doesn't pander or patronize children.
Directed and adapted by Wes Anderson, stop motion puppets, brilliant humor, how could it be wrong.
This movie is not really for children, and that surprised me! lol. The humor is clever, the animation is great, and overall the film kept me very entertained. I highly recommend!
Loved, loved, loved this movie. Cute. Funny. Clever. Go see this movie. I want to see it again already. Oh, and the music is cool too!

Based on the children's book by Roald Dahl its the story of a confident and sly fox(voiced by George Clooney), who enjoys stealing chickens amongst other things and upsetting the local farmers...the evil Boggis, Bunce and Bean. When these farmers decide to fight back with guns, bulldozers and bombs, Mr. Fox, his family and friends must burrow and dig further into the ground to seek shelter. To say this is like nothing I have never seen before would be an understatement...the stop-motion animation style is far from the bright and dynamic style of Disney's Pixar studios. In fact the pallet itself is rather washed out, but in this film it has a sort of beauty that's all its own. It's also nice to see an animated film rely on character and story rather than gimmicks like 3D or frenetic action scenes where everything is in motion. The subject matter is also more mature than most kids fare these days. Thats not to say that children won't enjoy it, but the sense of humor of the film has something for adults too. I think this is due to its director Anderson, known for his offbeat and deadpan humor...and using the same actors in a lot of his films, some of his regulars are used in this film. It is different from his other live-action work, but you can see and tell that it comes from the same sensibility. Groundbreaking? Maybe...maybe not, but certainly different and enjoyable to say the least. Voice cast also includes Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Eric Chase Anderson, Willem Dafoe, Owen Wilson and Michael Gambon.
Think "Ocean's 11", keep Clooney but throw out the slick camera work and "we're trying to be cooler than Sinatra, but never will be" vibe, and replace it with stop motion animals and humor so dry it's almost British.
thought this movie was great! It certainly was not made for children, but what Roald Dahl based movies usually are? It was full of witty lines and awesome characters. So fun!
It is rare when I see a movie that I think deserves every bit of the praise it has recieved. Stop-Motion Animation might just have found it's place in the awards history.

Anderson, the writer/director behind the great films The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Rushmore (1998), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) and The Darjeeling Limited (2007) is treating audiences to another whimsical and bittersweet tale of family and change. The main difference, of course, is that Anderson's new film, Fantastic Mr. Fox (based on the book by Roald Dahl), is entirely stop-motion animation. Many critics have argued that Anderson should have been making animated films his entire career based on the Fantastic-ness of his latest feature. Although I wouldn't trade any of his previous works for a replacement, I do agree that Anderson's unique style is extremely effective in the animation medium. Where else might you find a deadpan Badger voiced by Bill Murray, or a soundtrack to a children's film populated not by tween-y music but rather by The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys?
As one of my friends described it accurately, Fantastic Mr. Fox feels like an improvised animated film. The characters are lovable and understandable to children, certainly, but in addition, an older audience is treated to Anderson's comically ingenious humor. There has truly never been anything quite like Fantastic Mr. Fox, in terms of style and animation. The movie uses all of the great revolutionary techniques of stop-motion animation immortalized in Henry Selick's brilliant The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and elevates them to an entirely different level. And, more than any other film this year, Fantastic Mr. Fox is the children's film for adults (don't get me wrong, children will love the movie - but I suspect I loved it more). Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are belongs in this category, too, but whereas Jonze concentrated his efforts mostly on the darkness inherent in Maurice Sendak's children's story, Anderson explores both the darkness and the comedy.
Critic Reviews
Anderson injects such charm and wit, such personality and nostalgia -- evident in the old-school animation, storybook settings and pitch-perfect use of Burl Ives -- that it's easy to forgive his self-conscious touches.full review
Children, especially, will find things they don't understand, and things that scare them. Excellent. A good story for children should suggest a hidden dimension, and that dimension of course is the lifetime still ahead of them.full review
The film earns its title's superlative and a hundred more.full review

Fantastic Mr. Fox, which Mr. Anderson wrote with Noah Baumbach, and which he has been hoping to make for many years, is in some ways his most fully realized and satisfying film.full review
