His favorite one is going through Germany posing as an American GI of Teunonic extraction. Whenever he spots a girl he likes, he takes a Polaroid picture of her house, knocks on the door waving the photo and pretending to be on a pilgrimage to this very cottage his grandmother so vividly described. It is an infallible system for a hit-and-run seduction. Benson seems content with his game until he meets Jamison (David Niven), a real operator who has learned to combine sex with money. Jamison poses as an exiled prince and not only gets women to share his bed but also to bestow their jewels on him for the sake of the counterrevolution. Benson decides to corner Jamison's market on sex plus finance. A contest develops, and whoever wins will dominate a small Riviera resort as "King of the Mountain," the film's original title. Remade in 1988 as "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels."

The problem for me is that having FIRST watched Steve Martin and Michael Caine in the 1988 re-make "DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS".... I just couldn't fit Brando or Niven into the roles of Benson or Jamieson that Caine and Martin would come to play so perfectly, decades later.
Many of the gags and lines are the same from film to film but at times during BEDTIME STORY, I found myself laughing out loud at Brando's performance (and not for any good reasons either). Brando is not enormously funny in this film. (Great an actor as he is, how can he compete with Steve Martin comedically)? Niven is... well... Niven! He's prim, proper, dry and very British. A role that lacked the subtle, slow-burn reactions that Cain has perfected over his career.
BEDTIME STORY is not technically significant in any way. It's filmed in a very straight-forward, gimmick-free style with little or no attention paid to cinematography. The effects are what youve come to expect from a typical 60's era movie and add a certain charm to the overall production but doesn't deliver any real, visual stimuli or set any film-making standards.
This film was certainly funny for it's time and clearly... it's brilliance was strong enough for Hollywood to remake more than 20 years later, but for anyone who's seen and enjoyed the much superior DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS.... BEDTIME STORY will serve as a mere curiosity at best.
Watch it if you can find it.
This was a fun watch.Yes Brando can be funny! This film woud go on to be remade into "Dirty Rotten Scroundrels"
Very entertaining comedy. It's worth watching especially for young Brando. For the fans of classic movies :)

Marlon Brando plays a playboy GI who tricks women into sleeping with him and giving him jewels and money. David Niven is a similar, however more sophisticated, charactor. A man who pretends to be a Prince in order to extract jewels and cash from wealthy American tourists. Their paths cross when they share a train cabin together, and a bit of rivalry sparks. When Shirley Jones comes to visit the Riviera things really go haywire. It's a shame this movie is impossible to find and isn't on DVD because it's really quite a treasure. Overall 3.5/4 Stars Grade = B+
