In September 1971, thieves tunneled into the vault of a bank in Londons Baker Street and looted safe deposit boxes of cash and jewelry worth millions and millions of pounds. None of it was recovered. Nobody was ever arrested. The robbery made headlines for a few days and then suddenly disappeared - the result of a UK Government D Notice, gagging the press. This film reveals what was hidden in those boxes, involving murder, corruption and a sex scandal with links to the Royal Family - a story in which the thieves were the most innocent people involved.
A car dealer with a dodgy past and new family, Terry (Statham) has always avoided major-league scams. But when Martine (Burrows), a beautiful model from his old neighborhood, offers him a lead on a foolproof bank hit on London's Baker Street, Terry recognizes the opportunity of a lifetime. Martine targets a roomful of safe deposit boxes worth millions in cash and jewelry. But Terry and his crew don't realize the boxes also contain a treasure trove of dirty secrets - secrets that will thrust them into a deadly web of corruption and illicit scandal that spans London's criminal underworld, the highest echelons of the British government, and the Royal Family itself...the true story of a heist gone wrong...in all the right ways.

Despite this, 'The Bank Job' still managed to keep me thrilled and awake throughout, and satisfied my Saturday night movie hunger.
Well, the beginning of the film...lets just say it's a bit...revealing. But don't let it give you the wrong idea about the rest of the film. Heck, I'll just cut the subtlety- to be blunt, by 'revealing' I didn't mean showing the cards before the flop, but yes indeed, 'revealing' in a sexual, erotic nature. Hence the MA15+ rating.
So the story is good, the acting is quite brilliant (despite some seemingly 'forced' British accents) and the production is typical Hollywood-standard. Humour is scattered around in a suitable amount, helping the pacing and providing some downtime from intense scenes. However, I did find the pacing to accelerate throughout the film...but who cares.
One aspect of the film I was a little disappointed with was the whole 'Malcolm X' plot and character...he just seemed a bit lame and not 'hardcore' enough as the characters around him make him to be.
At a hearty 110min, this is certainly a worthwhile film for anybody into the whole robbery type subgenre, or anyone just looking for some solid, satisfying entertainment.
Solid film. Starts a little suddenly with very little back story given to the main characters but comes into its own towards the end. Statham is a solid (in more ways than one) lead and the single fight scene he has still rocks.

Good supporting performance from Keeley Hawes too as Statham's wife.
Meh. It was okay. Kind of slow and boring in places, I like a little more action in my Jason Statham movies. Or in any movie, really.
I was pleasantly surprised. A little less action and a lot more plot-oriented than your average Statham film.
Critic Reviews
With its cockneys and coppers and the caper that comes a cropper, the movie is fully engaging on several levels.full review
You need the right actors to make a movie as intelligent and as engaging as this one is, and [director] Donaldson knows how to make each character in this rather complex ensemble seem whole and distinct.full review
The Bank Job engages us fully with a tale that's well-fashioned more than anything else, a fascinating study of morality at several levels of English society, and of honor, or the lack of it, among implausibly likable thieves.full review
Well-paced, smartly told and unpretentious, this solid British heist thriller also has moments of invention and imaginationfull review
Director Roger Donaldson commendably avoids the violence-soaked artiness of Guy Ritchie's crime yarns, but fails to find a strong arc of action through the cluttered, sometimes confusing story.full review
I give in. Regardless of his limited acting range and penchant for choosing the goofiest projects available, Jason Statham is pretty awesome.full review
While other countries do state-of-the-art schadenfreude, we are stuck in the steam age. We feed coal into the engines of old-fashioned heist thrillers.full review
Director Roger Donaldson keeps the suspense crackling. By the end, you'll want to know more about a heist that literally did shake the empire.full review
