Joseph Mankiewcz really was one of the best. This is a very strong film dealing with racism. I loved it because it doesnt sugarcaot anything or overdramaticize the situation at all. This is a well shot, constructed film.

I really enjoyed this. Maybe it's because of the emotional baggage I brought to the viewing, but I found it very inspiring.

Not bad, not great. Message film with an average storyline. Spicing up the ending with thriller elements I thought made it worse.

Obvious,dated, no surprises but well scripted and interesting. Richard Wydmark suitably over the top as the rascist nutter. He would have been good in a Kubrick film.

It's not going to blow 21st century minds, but it's still a solid piece of work.

What starts out as a smart, even insightful racial drama, eventually turns into a pretty standard polemical thriller, with some embarrassing dialogue. Widmark impresses, as usual, as does Poitier in his film debut.
