A serene Juliet Binoche, frenetic Matthew Modine and wonderful Forest Whitaker invite us into a discussion of faith, choice, fear and judgment. A thoughtful and inspiring film.
Interesting perspective, but a little confusing. All in all, not bad. There are some nice pictures and scenes in it.

Enjoyed this one with Juliette very much! We are searching for the true meaning in life. This movie is a small step on the road there.

Most of Ferrara's work is inconsistent yet manages to achieve moments of brilliance, in large part because he is working with extreme situations and looking for answers in those situations. This is also an inconsistent film, and while its a deep thinking film, it feels less like a search and more like a commercial for esoteric Christianity.

Boring, Boring, Boring!!! May be something for people who are really interested in who Jesus is/was.
there is no point talking about religion. people hardly feel god till they are stuck in pain.
A strange and quite unsuccessful movie. The direction of nearly every scene seems over complicated, over thought and in the end you are too conscious of a director wanting to try all his fancy tricks that the story has no chance to get through. Also for a film where Mary Magdelene is supoposed to be central as theme and character, it's very male and jesus oriented. It's unnecessarily difficult, lacks a clear message, and it's protaganists badly conceived. Beyond that it's hard to watch. For all that effort there's as much message in the da vinci code and far less entertainment. The audience seems completely forgotten. The only message that comes through is that religion turns you into a self obsessed inconsiderate jerk. Ferrara has little compassion in this movie either for the subject, his characters or the audience.
