Benicio Del Toro and David Duchonvy were awesome. Halle Berry didn't impress me. The film was at some points extremely touching and shocking.
I liked this, 'cause it wasn't just like blah blah my husband died, but there was an edge.
Very unusual movie. A major bad part of it is that it moves realllllllllllly slow. There was good acting, some good points and a little bit of humor. This isn't a movie for those who like things to move along quickly. Definitely wasn't what I tho... (read more) Very unusual movie. A major bad part of it is that it moves realllllllllllly slow. There was good acting, some good points and a little bit of humor. This isn't a movie for those who like things to move along quickly. Definitely wasn't what I thought it would be. At least now we know what it was about and I don't plan to see it again. It's ok enough to see it once.
They really shouldn't have put kids in this movie. I cringed at the end to a completely predictable scene that could have been duplicated in a Disney movie. But Benicio's character isn't a beloved animal being taken away or put to sleep, he's a heroin addict leaving for rehab.
Good story, although not great. The title was somewhat confusing though because it's only a tiny part of the story - or maybe I just didn't get it.
Quite slow moving and uneventful. There's some hefty acting here but, apart from that, there's nothing much more to say about this movie.
3 1/2 stars.

Things We Lost in the Fire was an interesting movie with many positive points, one was the performances, by.Halle Berry and Benicio del Toro.
These two actors could express their emotions on screen without the need of exaggerated dialogs. The screenplay was also good, it gave a precise portrait of every character, so we can perfectly relate to them. Benicio Del Toro gave a honest insight what addiction was all about. The title was a bit confusing, considering the story, but director Susanne Bier did a great job and I simply like her movies. It was not an excellent drama but still interesting.
Kinda depressing but excellent acting performances from Halle and Benicio. Can't imagine having to pull yourself out of a living hell and keep looking forward all the while helping someone else do the same exact thing.
Critic Reviews
Often as overwrought as it is heartrending.full review
[Del Toro is] both beast and beauty in a movie that mismanages the idea that life is not a fairy tale.full review
The movie is an engrossing melodrama, and it has its heart in the right place.full review
Its deliberate pacing may put some viewers off, as will the bleakness of the subject matter, but it's worth seeing, mostly to soak up the complex shades of Del Toro's performance.full review
Del Toro delivers another powerfully simple and effective performance. Berry is fine but her character just doesn't add up, perhaps inevitable in a movie that seems to have been lost somewhere in translation.full review
This movie is the most irritating example yet of how both film and TV have taken to shooting even the phoniest, soapiest stories with that drunken, shaky, ultra- close-up camerawork that says, 'Hey, look at us! We're being all documentaryish!'full review
Apart from the mobile camera and a moderately challenging time-jumping script, this is weepy women's cable-television fare of the tears-and-cuddles variety.full review
Del Toro is the heart and soul, as well as the haunted, rubbery visage, of a story of grief and loss that would be fairly lifeless without him.full review
Just watching Del Toro's eyes provides an emotional fire Allan Loeb's script can't hope to match.full review
