The score is astounding, the direction superb and Daniel Day Lewis surpasses anything he’s ever done before. So much of this film is unique and marvelous that it highlights it’s shortcomings and failings. There are so few faults, but there is a level missing from it. There is a deliberate lack of conscience or remorse as the events of the film are shown entirely from Daniel Day Lewis’s paranoid perspective.

The downfall to the film is the lack of closure at the end and just how abhorrent Lewis’s character becomes. Yes, he’s supposed to be a bastard but it’s really off-putting to see him throw away life long relationships with remorse in the film’s final scenes. The film needed something else, be it another bit to define Daniel’s paranoid behavior or some form of resolution.

Don’t get me wrong, this is one of the best films of the decade. The direction is flawless and the acting exceptional. It’s so close to a true masterpiece and an all time great, but it doesn’t quite get there. It’s one of those films that leaves the viewer depressed and feeling like they’ve been through an ordeal—that exactly what it’s supposed to do. It accomplishes everything it sets out to but there’s something missing…

A Classic in the making!

As an incurable romantic, I hold out hope that Anderson's flawed but phenomenal feat here marks the start of a new, mature stage in a long career. He has genius in him. So does the movie -- before its ending.

There Will Be Blood hits with hurricane force. Lovers of formula and sugarcoating will hate it. Screw them. In terms of excitement, imagination and rule-busting experimentation, it's a gusher.

Conjure up the maddest despot scene you can remember and you might get a sense of the seismic register of Day-Lewis's extravagant performance. Watch and marvel, though you may have to suspend your disbelief from the top of an oil derrick.
