Based on the life of drug-kingpin-turned-informant, Frank Lucas, who grew up in segregated North Carolina where he watched as his cousin was shot by the Klan for looking at a white girl. He eventually made his way to Harlem where he became a heroin kingpin by traveling to Asia's Golden Triangle to make connections, shipping heroin back to the US in the coffins of soldiers killed in Vietnam. He soon made upwards of one million dollars a day in drug sales. Lucas was shadowed by lawman, Richie Roberts, who finally helped bring the kingpin to justice. The two then worked together to expose the crooked cops and foreign nationals who made importing heroin so easy.

It was interesting to learn about the true story behind the film American Gangster. Plus, once the film got rolling, it was quite entertaining. But, for the most part, this movie mumbles along as it drags on for over 2 and a half hours.
Good acting and a decent script, but ultimately this otherwise good gangster movie left me wanting more out of it.
I waited far too long to see this film and I loved it. Ridley Scott makes one sound film, doesn't he? Very entertaining.
Basada en hechos reales y estética Zodiac tiene una gran puesta en escena aunque le sobran algunos minutos. Esta vez sÃ, Ridley.
Not terrible. It wasn't as good as I had hoped it would be, but I still liked it. "We Own The Night" was better. I recall a lot of people comparing the two films.

Focuses way too much on the villain and completely forgot the hero. He was about as despicable as the villain leaving us with absolutely no one to root for
I liked the story. The acting is rock solid, which is good, because the script leaves the two leads rather two dimensional. The acting is rock solid, which is good, because the script leaves the two leads rather two dimensional. Hint: if you're making a story about bad guy, we're really not going to be interested in the cop, i.e. I didn't care about the divorce. There were some extraneous scenes.
It does raise some interesting questions. E.g. Mom admits that she didn't want to know where the money came from. Why the sudden change of heart? I mean, how do you go to church if you know at some level that the money is dirty?
Most important message the movie teaches us: Do not shoot a shotgun at a steel reinforced door.

I found the second half to be more interesting than the first half, when the two main characters are getting closer to each other. I did find the ending a bit unsatisfying though. There is a lot to like here but it just didn't grab me enough to be considered one of the better movies of 2007.
Critic Reviews
Length does not add substance to the drama, even where reality adds weight to the argument.full review
It marks a return to the lost art of true storytelling, every bit as epic as 'The Godfather' and just as fascinating to see.full review
Their ambition is out there. But for all the sprawl, American Gangster feels secondhand. It's like Scarface drained of blood, at arm's length from the culture that spawned it.full review
It's a much better film than nine-tenths of what's out there on any given Friday, and if you're a fan of steak-and-potatoes crime drama, I highly recommend it.full review
This is an engrossing story, told smoothly and well, and Russell Crowe's contribution is enormous.full review
As an entertaining cops-and-crook procedural -- it's not half-bad, jacked up by strong performances, a couple of bravura action scenes and a generous attention to period detail.full review
The movie, based on a true story, takes surprising twists and turns right up to its chilling ending and is probably the best gangster crime drama of the year.full review
As a piece of storytelling -- built on the foundation of a great story -- it's an epic that's been sliced and diced into so many little morsels that almost nothing in it has any weight.full review
American Gangster's simultaneous celebration of crime, punishment and upward mobility should be titled Cry Capitalism. That's the code of the new Western.full review
Call it the black Scarface or the Harlem Godfather or just one hell of an exciting movie, but the fact-based, 1970s-era American Gangster is already looking like a major awards contender.full review
