One of my favorite cop thrillers of all time. Great film.
After watching this for a second time I still think it's a very good crime thriller. I think Joaquin Phoenix's performance was great. This movie does a good job of drawing you in. Plus, you can't go wrong with Eva Mendes as Phoenix's girlfriend. ... (read more) After watching this for a second time I still think it's a very good crime thriller. Taking this with his two earlier films (Little Odessa, The Yards), and I submit that Gray has a trilogy to rival that of Francis Coppola. He owns it, all right.

GREAT CAST, GOOD PLOT, EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES. Its rawness is the greatest asset, and despite the imbalance of the dynamics it's a good James Gray movie.
Grand film noir, à la fois profondément moderne et très joliment classique.

Offers little that Scorsese doesn't offer with more élan and wit.full review
In many ways this traditional-looking flick gives off a vibe of been there-seen it but at the same time it pulsates with a raw energy and rhythm all its own.full review
Gray's craftsmanship is admirable, which shows some old-fashioned reverence for the triangulated composition of Scene, Character, Plot and avoids, by and large, the snazzy edits and visual bling that pass for a cinematic imagination these days.full review
God knows [writer-director Gray] has skill and integrity, but perhaps it's time to acknowledge that he could use script help.full review
This is an atmospheric, intense film, well acted, and when it's working it has a real urgency.full review
We Own the Night is a bloody, passionate melodrama, self-consciously Shakespearean -- or Biblical, or Greek, take your pick of atavisms -- in its intentions.
The theme of this absorbing crime drama centers on a simple idea: Blood is thicker than powder.full review
