pretty good sci fi/horror movie, with a real messed up twist at the end, worth watchin just to see the ending
One of my favorite actors is in this movie. I knew he would die for obvious reasons. So I didn't see it.
A fast start, but then it starts to get boring pretty fast... Great ending though.
The trapped-in-the-grocery-story story got a little long-winded (and the monsters were just a little too disgusting), but the ending was kick-ass and ballsy. For that, I elevate my 3 stars to 4.
Probably the best Stephen King adaptation, and even better than the book.

Also one of the only endings that was an "Oh Sh--!" moment for me, definitely captured the short story's mood and characters, which is a major thing, because to me not very many of Stephen King's works have translated as well as they should have on the big screen.
Pretty decent... but ultimately I felt like some of the supporting performances were so hokey or over the top that it kind of ruined it for me.
Okay. Here's how this movie SHOULD have been made: HITCHCOCK.

Take away the bugs. There are no bugs. The religious lady doesn't say much. She's not an evil fanatic, just a fanatic, but still makes her point. The mist is never explained. No other dimensions. No miilitary subplot. Just a mist in which things die and people think they have to escape. At the end, the mist just dissipates, or they drive out of it, and it's never explained. It doesn't HAVE to be explained. It just needs to be menacing.
As this movie stood, however, it was AWFUL.
The bugs even take away from the weight of the religious explanation. It's not that her explanation is that wrong, it's that she calls for radical solutions. People still go out in the mist and die, but without the freaking bugs. OH...and as for THAT...I assume that in BUG dimension, bugs don't eat eachother??? I mean, flying bugs and bugodactyl and bugspider and bugosaurus never seem to ONCE attack any of the others. Ridiculous. This movie really had no point, as I could see it.
But the absolute WORST part was at the end when he shoots everyone but himself, and he's SUCH a horrible actor (if I ever directed a film, I would never put him in it) at least in times of extreme grief. And what's with the African theme music while the EXTREME IRONY OF THE RESCUE plays out in slow mo? I fast forwarded through that part as I rolled my eyes and groaned.
FRANK DARABONT, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING????? YOU MADE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION???? YOU KNOW HOW TO CREATE SUSPENSE.
This was just awful.
Critic Reviews
The Mist builds toward a climax so wrenching that I hesitate to recommend the film, but I think Darabont earns his vision.full review
The issues raised may make for some lively debate on the way home -- especially if it's foggy out.full review
It is a competently made Horrible Things Pouncing on People Movie. If you think Frank Darabont has equaled the Shawshank and Green Milefull review
That bloated sense of purpose turns what could have been a nifty B-movie into a strained, two-hours-plus Twilight Zone episode, and, believe me, Darabont's no Rod Serling.full review
Film adaptations of King's work tend to be hit and miss, but with last summer's '1408' and now this scary-as-hell flick, he's on a roll.full review
I'm scared of a lot of things. Cancer, Al Qaeda, teenagers. Land octopi aren't in my top 1000.full review
Some scary movies can stand your hair on end. A few can make your skin crawl. The Mist gave me the feeling I was being scalped with an icicle.full review
The Mist is a supermarket of B-movie essentials, handsomely stocked with bad science, stupid behavior, chewable lines of dialogue, religious fruitcakes, and a fine display of monsters.full review
Frank Darabont ditches the warm and fuzzies for out-and-out cynicism about mankind's capacity for goodness and altruism with The Mist.full review
