(read more) What starts out like prime fodder for the 70's exploitation genre turns into kid friendly thriller material in the blink of an eye. Loosely based on a variation of the urban legend "The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs", Fright tells the story of sexy, virginal Amanda who takes on the position of babysitter for an odd couple, who have an impossibly cute little boy. Soon, Amanda starts to feel as if someone is watching her through the windows.

It's all well shot and moderately suspenseful in the first half of the film, but once the "terror" begins it feels premature and as unexciting as you can get.

One can admire the filmmakers for being a bit more classy with this film, but in the long run, the film is a little too classy, shying away from any real terror, violence, or scares. Fright plays out more like a dull episode of Murder She Wrote.

Fright is an admirable exercise is mood, but it falls short in just about every other area.

Now the script isn't amazing, but what Peter Collinson does with it is. It's perfect evidence of how storytelling in films rests so much in the hands of the director. Collinson composes so incredible shots, and utilizes longer shots, camera movement and zooms to great effect. His directing style is really solid and effective and makes this film incredibly watchable, where a lesser director could have made it boring as all hell.
He really splits the acts in this film, and shifts moods seemlessly as this film really seems like three movies in one, yet it never ends up being disorienting.
Although this is only the second film I've seen of his, and supposedly one of his worst along with the other, Tomorrow Never Comes, he is quickly becoming a favourite of mine.
Filmmaking aside, Susan George is nothing to sneeze at and for someone like me, make a film worth watching.

The camerawork is nice though, with some very cool angles and choices.

Pretty run of the mill 'teenage babysitter alone in the house with crazy fucker trying to get inl' flick, but i enjoyed it. But then, I enjoy a lot of crap, so...

One of the first films showing the babysitter being stalked. Started ok, but by the end the script was offensive to the viewer.
