After years of trying to hunt this movie down I finally laid my hunts on a dutch import and my of my what a let down!!! "Prison" is a pretty bog standard 80's supernatural horror, often showing moments of promise but never fully capitalizing on the decent premise. My advice is if you really must watch a movie where a dude executed on death row returns to cause supernatural havoc then check out Wes Craven's superior movie "Shocker".

Now, after several years, the prison is re-opening, with Smith as its Warden, and 300 prisoners are moved in to help renovate the prison, including then-unknown Viggo Mortenson (Lord of the Rings Trilogy, A History of Violence, Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3), who resembles the executed prisoner. When the old electrocution chamber is reopened, the evil spirit of Forsyth roams the prison (via a combination of ectoplasm and electricity), killing off inmates and guards alike. This Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4) directed film is an absolute gem that DESPERATELY needs a transferal to DVD and Blu-ray. Thanks to excellent direction from Harlin and a surprisingly good cast, which also includes Tommy "Tiny" Lister (Wishmaster 2, Friday), Tom Everett (Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3, Friday the 13th 4), Chelsea Field (The Birds II: Land's End), and the great Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th Parts 7-10, Hatchet, a million other movies), Prison manages to exceed on many levels, delivering a fun story, surprisingly decent effects, good kills, and an overall fun movie. Like I said, this needs to be put on DVD badly. A terrific, underrated, hidden gem. I highly recommend people to seek this one out.

However, one can only take so many meaningless deaths before you begin to wonder if you should bother watching the rest.
Not bad, but it's never quite able to build up tythe suspense, and the final act feels a bit rushed.
This is a great supernatural thriller, and much underated in my opinion.
A bit Shawshank meets the Shining.
I cant understand why it's not more well known!
Actually not badly put together by Harlin and Viggo shows some pretty good chops. Solid gore effects reminiscent of Hellraiser.
According to IMDB, the character Burke is a ghost come back to get revenge for his wrongful execution. I couldn't really tell that from the story, though he did look like the guy.

The prison was super creepy, and it inmates were so forgivable that you were on the side of the state agent who wanted to rehibilitate them. The very likable Lane Smith played the warden who became less likable with every action.
There are some terrorific death scenes... the best involving pipes and air tubing.
The plot points happening during some of the action occasionally left me with the "oh no! I missed something important by being distracted by bright lights!" kind of feeling.
I liked this movie. It took me awhile to see it, but I mainly got it because it was Renny Harlin's first flick in the states, and it got him the directing seat for Nightmare 4. It was neat to see all aesthetics he would later use in 4.

A pissed off spirit vows revenge from the grave for being fried in the electrical chair when he was innocent. He is released from his tomb and starts killing those who wronged him (seem familiar?).
Killer barb wire, rooms turning into blazing infernos, lot's of action, A pre-fame Viggo Mortenson, all the prison stereotypes, and Renny Harlin over doing it as usual, but that's why I love his directing. It was very fast paced.
I liked how the spirit "Charles Forsyth" pops out of the dirt much like Freddy did too the sandcastle, the movie does have some annoying characters and the photography is done in under lit dungeon tones which seems too murky at times, but I think it's a decent horror action low budget dish.
Better than it has any right to be. It's like Shawshank redemption meets Poltergeist meets Friday the 13th.
Has an, for the most part, excellent cast, interesting characters, a cool story and concept and some great gore effects.

Prison is far and away one of the best lost gems of 80's horror I've ever found. There are so few really cool, well done horror films around this time period that it always blows me away when one sneaks under the radar.
IF you are a fan of horror than you need to do yourself a favor and check this bad boy out. Very creep, gory, fun, over the top stuff.
