Repeatedly drawn to the site of the purported abduction, Keane wanders the bus station compulsively going over the events of that fateful day. Veering between days of relentless searching and nights of alcohol and drug induced extremes of self-destructive behavior; he seems to be teetering precariously on the edge of sanity. Then one day he meets a financially strapped young woman, Lynn Bedik, and her seven-year-old daughter, Kira, who are also staying at the same transient motel in New Jersey. He reaches out to them and soon the mother entrusts him to pick up Kira after school and bring her home. As he becomes increasingly attached to the child, the story moves to a whole new level of poignancy and tension, as Keane searches for redemption through the little girl.

Damian Lewis delivers such an intense and disturbingly touching performance, yet the moments in which his character is not suffering from momentary episodes have a completely different air, tranquil and full of serenity. The complexity of Lewis's acting captures Keane's troubled life and makes it relatable to the audience. Unlike, 'Clean, Shaven', the narrative is not subjective. What we witness on screen is exactly as Keane is experiencing reality. Even during his violent outbursts, Kerrigan focuses completely on Keane and doesn't use ambiguous imagery to portray hallucinations, if really experienced.

An excellent performance from Damian Lewis - he is in almost every shot and is onscreen for pretty much the entire film. I've rarely seen the camera stay on one character, often nearly filling the shot, for so much of a film - but this does create the impression that William Keane is so closed-off and isolated by the trauma of loosing his daughter that we (the audience) often only see where he is through glimpses of the background. His world is so narrow and focused that ours is too.
Like I said, interesting but still a long way from being a classic.

Great camera work as well: again, the first scene is just raw, unnerving, and completely necessary.

He doesn't break narrative, there is no dream sequence or alternate world, no camera tricks. Since Keane is a schizophrenic nothing is set in stone, the whole movie could be in his mind. And there in lies the genius, it doesn't play it out for cheap plot twists, it lets the viewer decide. The camera sits on Keane's shoulder and we watch his face or what he looks at.

Very unnerving. Well directed and acted. The story compelling and sometimes touching.

But whether it intrigues you, annoys you, or makes you supremely uncomfortable at first, you'll be rewarded for sticking around until the end. Kerrigan looks with unflinching honesty at a man tormented by the loss of his daughter (real or imaginary, we don't know) while at the same time struggling to be functional and presentable enough to look after her when she is found. Breslin, Ryan, and Lewis are mesmerizing to watch, even as we recoil from the daily torment Lewis's character must endure.
