The story isn't that good but the animation and the characters are great and funny
This is a really fun movie to watch. It's got lots of great humor in it but it tends to get a little too serious at some points and is a bit predictable (I saw the whole Alex going after Marty gig the whole way before even seeing it).

Nevertheless, it is a great movie and the penguins and King Julien bring the best comedic parts. I have to recommend it!
Very late to getting around to watching this. It was just average. Animation is not up to par with any Pixar, film as well a story too. Is is just me but I don't like Chris Rock's voice.
This is one of the better attempts for an outside studio to match the greatness of Pixar.
Critic Reviews
What makes it good is that the story is a kind of parable that suggests some seriousness beneath the surface, even sadness.full review
It'll be fun for the smaller kids, but there's not much crossover appeal for their parents.full review
The animation is visually stunning, and the animals' stylized rendering and friendly look is in keeping with the energetic mood of the movie.full review
Like many computer-animated features, this one, about four animals exiled from the Central Park Zoo, expends most of its imaginative resources on clever visuals.full review
While teens and adults can do worse than Madagascar (anyone for Kingdom of Heaven?), this slight and amusing 'toon is mostly a trip designed for the kiddie crowd to take in.full review
The movie sadly runs aground on old gags that no amount of eye-popping color and frenzied action can spin into gold.full review
Modestly improving upon the wretched DreamWorks animation template, Madagascar still fails to approximate Pixar's trademark mix of hilarity and poignancy.full review
