The film is built upon a project created by the National Endowment for the Arts to gather the writing of soldiers and their families who have participated in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Through interviews and dramatic readings by such actors as Robert Duvall, Josh Lucas, Beau Bridges, Blair Underwood, Justin Kirk, Aaron Eckhart, Chris Gorham and John Krasinski, the film transforms selections from this collection of writing into a deep examination of the experiences of the men and women who are serving in Americas armed forces. At the same time it provides depth and context to these experiences through a broader look at the universal themes of war literature.

This film Totally repositioned my views and opinions about the war that the troops have been fighting. for some reason I feel I should see more films that have been filmed this way.

There are some very talented writers among our soldiers and war veterans. War became so much more real to me after hearing firsthand accounts from the soldiers about what it is/was like. The cinematography and animation were well done. I really appreciated the different aesthetics for the different stories. Really powerful documentary.
Really good documentary about war and the inner state of the individual soldiers taking part in it. Great idea, visuals and soundtracks (could have been a bit brighter).
i think this was the best documentary this year. great writing from the troops. great visuals. little agenda.

There are flashes of just pure brilliance in this movie. Some of the narratives within this film are the best I've heard or seen as artistic presentations.

For me...I don't know what to think of this war...I'm personally not for it...and aside from religion and oil, I don't really see what the fight is over. That being said, I felt this uneasy feeling throughout this film...like there was this huge elephant in the room that no one was talking about.
A film about psychological and emotional scars of war. Like watching a collection of short stories.
If you are a fan of Frontline or PBS this is a great film. I have a ton of respect for these soldiers to relive and tell their stories from their own point of view - like their war experiences this film took a lot of guts to make. Well done.
You just have to watch this film. So powerful, and amazing. I truly recommend this one to everyone!
Well deserving of Oscar nomination. An account of our recent conflicts from the mouths/words/writings of those in the field.
Critic Reviews
The anthology format would fit better on TV, as would director Richard E. Robbins' unfortunate use of cheesy slo-mo re-enactments. When Robbins flickers through a series of photos of the fallen, the rapid cutting becomes absurd and dehumanizing.full review
Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience is an eloquent manifestation of the notion articulated in John Fowles's The Magus that "It is not countries that go to war, but men."full review
