It was a cute movie, but nothing spectacular. Of course it's a fairytale in which everything happens.
A modern day fairy tale that is not overly sweet nor endearing. However, I find it quite entertaining especially watching it at 2.00 in the morning.

It is rare to see the two leads, James McAvoy and Christina Ricci so adorable. Unfortunately they seemed to have nothing to do with each other in the movie. Their looks, their style, their presence are all as different as the 2 poles of a magnet. They were probably given the roles due to budget restraints or their working schedule.
On the other hand, Peter Dinklage (as Lemon) gave a memorable performance.
A lovely story......her mom in the story oddly reminds me of my own mother....

"I like myself the way I am!"
"I felt the rush of a thousand heartbreaks."

I thought James McAvoy's character fell in love with her a little to quickly. Loved Reese Witherspoon's character. She really can play anything. But yeah Penelope's nose really wasn't that bad. Christina Ricci really is a good actress and I really like her movies. Love James McAvoy, he was great in Atonement and Wanted. I really can't wait to see more from him because he is a very talented.

I'm not into family-friendly cutesy films, but even I have to admit this was a really enjoyable and well done movie. It's something that everyone can enjoy at any age. Christina Ricci is adorable, and if you're a girl, there's no doubt that by the time the credits start to roll, you'll be totally in love with James McAvoy. A must-see for families, and for anyone who enjoys a good fairy tale every once in a while.
James McAvoy <3
I saw it twice and still think it's a nice modern fairytale .
Btw , Hoppipolla is a quite memorable song ( esp , the instrumental version )
Yes, ugliness is indeed a curse. However most of us don't get to pick between James McAvoy and the guy who played older Octavian in Rome. Movies are bullshit.
Actually a very sweet film. It sometimes gets annoying but on the whole it moves along at a brisk pace with an endearing performance from Christina Ricci.

One thing that bothers me though: How is it that James McAvoy adopts an American accent and a lot of the people (including children) speak in their regular British accents?
Quite a sweet movie. Will make a very good present for a certain friend later this week =]
Critic Reviews
While uneven, this Ugly Duckling redux is hipper and funnier than a Disney movie, and the positive message to young girls can't be discounted.full review
Sweet as gingerbread, Penelope deserves to find an audience; those with a taste for happily-ever-afters should look for it, before it too-quickly disappears.full review
The picture has a hapless, meandering quality that's tolerable at first but ultimately becomes maddening, as if it were a cartoon narrative recounted by a distracted 4-year-old.full review
Penelope was in a trough of trouble before the oink on the script was dry.full review
Perhaps the best reason to recommend Penelope is that it offers an opportunity to watch Catherine O'Hara in action as the alarming Mrs. Wilhern.full review
Penelope sat unreleased for two years, and no wonder. It's a shambles, so inexpertly timed and clumsily directed by newcomer Mark Palansky that it seems like a first-draft edit of some hopeless, abandoned project.full review
Aimed at tweenage girls and mushy romantics of all age and stripe, Penelope has a quick gait and a nice comic tone.full review
Director Mark Palansky wishes he was Tim Burton. So will you, because even with producer Reese Witherspoon showing up in a cameo, Penelope is dead on arrival.full review
Mark Palansky goes for Tim Burton-by-Jean-Pierre Jeunot whimsicality with Penelope, a storybook fable that never overplays its cutesiness but also fails to figure out what it wants to be.full review
