Way too much puppy-death in this movie for it to be anything other than horribly depressing. If you want to make a comedy, the maximum number of puppies that can die is: zero. IM JUST SAYING. If you want to make a comedy, the maximum number of puppies that can die is: zero. IM JUST SAYING. Other than that..it still sucked. I think the movie was secretly financed by PETA. She actually said that line about a holocaust of chicken-slaughtering. THERE IS A HOLOCAUST GOING ON. Except instead of people, it's chickens. Totally the same thing, except not really, you fucking nutbag.

Year of the Dog is a film about love, love for a person, animal, or lifestyle. The film starts to get lost near the end, Molly Shannon's Peggy starts to act crazy and improbably, but the ending is satisfying, if sappy. Peter Sarsgaard is the best part of the film, giving a funny and sweet little performance.
This film is interesting and very different. The characters and situations are funny, sad and a little weird, but the message of the film is a very good one. Molly Shannon is excellent.
I thought this was going to be rom com type thing. ermm there were funny bits, not really any romance as such. erm... Yep. i watched it...
As much as I like Molly Shannon...this movie was very odd, and pretty much sucked.
omg - this movie made me cry in the beginning (poor pencil!). After that, I was expecting something completely different than what I got. It was sooo depressing. I guess b/c it had Molly Shannon, I assumed it would be a funny movie... it's not. M... (read more) omg - this movie made me cry in the beginning (poor pencil!). Molly Shannon did well with the dramatic work though...
Ugh- this one was totally blaaaaaah. I would much rather see Molly Shannon in a goofy role.
Critic Reviews
Much is said in little moments: The entire cast offers jots of humor and insight, from Reilly and Sarsgaard to Laura Dern as a spiny sister-in-law and Regina King as Layla, a vehemently supportive friend.full review
A gentle, melancholy and silly movie about a loner whose only secure source of affection is her beagle.full review
In the end, [writer-director] White settles for some unearned and unpersuasive optimism, which, in Hollywood scriptwriting, serves as shorthand for poignancy.full review
Peggy is an admirable woman, get that, and not to pitied. Or is she? I wasn't and still am not surefull review
A bittersweet dark comedy about a lonely middle-aged woman who finds that animals are the only beings she can truly rely on.full review
A quiet, disappointing character study. The film is a little too smug and quirky for its own good.full review
