Steve Carrell further elevated his status as a leading man by playing the aforementioned hero to this movie, with a certain awkwardness and sincerity that elevates the premise behind this story. Of course, the supporting cast features stars who would move on to bigger success in their own right, and making Judd Apatow films a new comedic standard.

A 40 year old virgin who finally gets married to a "grandmother" at the end of the movie and loses his virginity. But before this happened, there was some crazy plots throughout the movie. The man is 40 and still rides a bike and has action figures! He kicked a lady in the nose when she sucks on his toes. He goes out and the drunk lady throws up on him while she is driving. He actually dates a drag queen. He was about to have sex with his future wife until his wife's daughter and the teenage boyfriend walks in. His wife's daughter hated him until she found out that he was a virgin. Make sure you see the deleted scenes from this movie. It will help you understand the plot better.

Apatow's direction is feeble (just turn the camera on the people talking, maybe in a two shot) perhaps because of insecurity, perhaps out of deference to the perceived quality of the material. And some of the material, such as a speed-dating session, is top-notch.
there so many funny moments, its best to get your own DVD. gotta luv Steve Carell and the crew.
This movie was better the 2nd time I watched it, maybe it was the hype when it first came out. Some classic scenes!
Manages to pull off some crass humour without becoming juvenile, and even manages some sensitivity and depth of character. Mostly it's Carell who makes the movie, the supporting cast play it like a teen sex comedy.
One of the most clever and funny comedies of late. The talented cast ensure laughs.

If it were 20 minutes shorter, it would be that much closer to perfect.full review
[T]his unbelievably foul-mouthed ... and nonstop, gaspingly hilarious picture ... establishes faux-mild-mannered Steve Carell ... as a major big-screen comic star.full review
It's worth making a date with The 40-Year-Old Virgin. You won't go home disappointed.full review
The 40-Year-Old Virgin disarms us -- it is, at its heart, a sweet-natured romantic comedy. Unfortunately, you have to clear away a fair bit of debris to find that heart.full review
The whole film is about embarrassment, about those moments of clammy vulnerability when the world just turns and stares.full review
The 40-Year-Old Virgin is surprisingly insightful, as buddy comedies go, and it has a good heart and a lovable hero.full review
The 40-Year-old Virgin maintains a deft balancing act, playing raunchy sight gags and rude dialogue against heartfelt moments.full review
The 40-Year-Old Virgin is too long, too sexist, and too -- shall we say -- flaccid.full review
