He's struggling to finish his PhD thesis when his father, the learned Eli Michaelson, wins the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Barkley and his mother, Sarah, a renowned forensic psychiatrist, now have the ill-fortune of living with a man-eating monster whose philandering ways have gotten less and less discrete. As if Barkley's world is not bad enough, on the eve of his father receiving the Nobel, Barkley is kidnapped and the requested ransom is the $2,000,000 in Nobel prize money. Needless to say, Eli refuses to pay it and so starts a venomous tale of familial dysfunction, lust, betrayal and ultimately revenge. In the words of Michel De Montaigne, the 16th century philosopher: "There is more barbarity in eating a man alive than in eating him dead."

Great mix of familiar cast, some in familiar roles. But mix in Egotistical Arrogance and Marginal Insanity, and get a Plot as twisted as it's characters. Is it Psycho Drama or Psychodrama?

He said it was going to be on at 3:00 this morning and I had to DVR it. I am glad I did. I would have completely overlooked this one on the guide. It is a good crime caper/thiller that writes itself a little too far over its head and then has to break a few eggs to make the finished omlette, but a very entertaining movie.

There are good actors (Alan Rickman, Bill Pullman, Mary Stenburgen) which don't get a chance to act, good characters that aren't investigated, and a hot girl (Eliza Dushku) whose hardly ever on-screen. This whole movie is two characters sending their diabolical plans back and forth at each other, no character development or exciting visuals whatsoever. Seriously, they're has to be something better on HBO.
Rickman was excellent, but the movie just felt too big for it's own good- it just got really lame as things kept piling up.
Now I know the definition of autodidact. Lots of loose ends in the script like, why have the construction worker return, where's the IOU and why erase the phone messages?
alan rickman was the good thing in it, the soundtrack by oakenfold kinda felt misplaced, the over use of mini coopers in that made it almost a commercial for them and the story had nothing to offer then a foreseen twist...
There was a lot more going on in this plot than I had anticipated; perhaps a bit too much, but I'll give it credit for trying. Alan Rickman and Mary Steenburgen are both great; everyone else is meh. Alan Rickman and Mary Steenburgen are both great; everyone else is meh. But perhaps it's the characters I dislike and not the actors. After all, Bill Pullman is always just some guy; how could I possibly be affronted by that? But, one thing's for sure: I absolutely hated the ending!
I've said it before and I'll say it again: any movie with Alan Richman in it is automatically worth watching. And Bill Pullman . . . I'm liking that guy more all the time. After watching a preview for this movie, I really expected to like it but I ended up really hating it.What a major disappointment

The plot and premise, whilst farfetched, are quite clever albeit a little twisted and yucky. The music, with some irritating vocoder moments, seems to be randomly chosen and randomly placed throughout the film which detracts somewhat, along with some ropey cinematography and dodgy editing, all of which conspire to make this an unappealing way to spend 2hrs. Much as I generally like Alan Rickman, I'd avoid this one.

Alan Rickman plays a perfect dick (ie., he plays a dick perfectly) and has some great lines. The plot is fairly predictable, and the so-called twists don't really surprise that much. The cast has a huge range of great actors, although most of them aren't really given much to do (specifically DeVito and Danson). Finally, the title song wasn't that great, and ditto for the rest of the music. In short: a caper film that thinks it's a better movie than it is when it's really just a collection of connected jokes.
Critic Reviews
It might not win any awards, but it's a highly entertaining way to spend an evening.full review
Even if you can summon some admiration for Nobel Son's editing or snippets of clever dialogue, the movie is so relentlessly self-congratulatory, you can't help becoming thoroughly sick of it.full review
Except for a mildly engaging heist scene in the middle of the movie, the story never gets within a mile of the Quentin Tarantino classics it tries to evoke.full review
Fans of Rickman will appreciate the actor's sneering mix of buffoonery and misanthropy, Steenburgen gives another of her playfully ironic turns, and Miller's direction allows for few, if any, lulls.full review
Nobel Son isn't funny enough for black comedy, nor suspenseful enough for a thriller; for all its flashy flailings and thumb-slicings, it's ultimately a little dull.full review
The plot by itself could have become tiresome; no audience enjoys spending all evening walking into stone walls. But the acting is another matter.full review
