With a script by Billy Wilder, how can you lose? Put John Barrymore in the mix and you have a sure fire winner of a screwball comedy. Another winner from Hollywood's most glorious year, 1939. An overlooked treat.

This film was an extremely pleasant surprise. Don Ameche is as charismatic and sexy as ever, and Lionel Barrymore is at turns hilarious and heartfelt. Don Ameche is as charismatic and sexy as ever, and Lionel Barrymore is at turns hilarious and heartfelt. The comedy is consistent throughout, and the absurdity of Eve's situation as she scams her aristocratic friends into believing her to be a Hungarian baroness keeps building and building to a brilliant finale. The scene in which Barrymore mimics Eve's daughter on the film is one of the funniest moments to grace the silver screen. Best of all, while the plot is rife with conflict and genuine dramatic tension, all of the characters are basically good people. Fantastically well done.

This is one of those incredibly sweet & fun films that I need to watch about once a year... And Claudette is some super-charming eye candy if ever there was!

I don't really know why, but I love this movie. It's so much fun, and surprisingly well done. One of the great old movies from the golden days of Hollywood.
