Decent Bunuel melodrama from his Mexican period. It touches upon, but doesn’t really develop fully, some interesting ideas about class, and how brutality and oppression function. The old man who keeps wanting to eat candy is a hoot.

En general es un filme convecional, pero con chispazos de los elementos tipicos del hispano: Iconografia religiosa, erotismo puro (Katy Jurado), uno que otro simbolo surrealista (la clasica gallina), etc. Gran obra tempranera del periodo mexicano. Buena.

The characters are classical but nice, there is some laughs on behalf of the old father and in the slaughterhouse. The conflict is interesting enough, and it's all probably loaded with symbolics and paralelles that I can't see.
Some really nice photography though, as in the back street chase.

Probably worth it if you're a fan, but as my second Bunuel-film, it didn't really hit the jackpot.
